Why is it considered necessary to rinse the detergent from the clothes after washing them. Why not just hang them up to dry to save a lot of water. OK, on a wet windy day i would trail a stream of bubbles. I reckon I can live with that. Any serious reason?

Depends what you wash them in, a few under garments washed in non-bio liquid I probably wouldn't bother rinsing, anything washed in bio powder or liquid and subsequently rinsed gives me a terrible rash...
