Hi again,
Spending a night on the new boat tonight.

It has two radios an old looking mounted unit and a handheld horizon thing - looks quite new - well the box does anyway.

Never used them before so thought I'd see if they worked. On radio check (coastguard only about 7 miles away) I got LOUD AND CLEAR with the old unit on 1WATT (powered by ships lead acid). There is a dial type of thing with two needles which move on transmission. They crossed at the line which matches with the number 3. They drop opposite directions when I listen in.

And NO REPLY with the new looking handheld thing on 1WATT OR 5WATT (fully charged battery)

OH yes, the antenna is pushpit mounted for the old jobby, so height of both transmissions the same.

Does this make any sense to anyone? Is the handheld knackered? It does send a signal to the old job about 5 feet away, so it sort of works I assume?
Thanks in advance and enjoy your evening

Hello Tim

Five feet away into the main VHF set is no test at all. It would do that even if you were able to remove the antenna and fit a dummy load.

You need to test with someone, preferably NOT on Channel 16, with someone further along the marina.

You don't state where you are living or sailing but I suspect you 'just' might be Scottish?

If you are down south and can get your H/H to me, I can test it for you if all else fails. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hello David,

Just got a radio check with the H/H on a working channel with someone out fishing (brave) - he reckons he is about 2 miles away.

So I have no idea what this means - I guess I can at least rely on the old radio anyhow.
thanks

Two miles is OK for a H/H boat to boat.

Someone will be along in a minute and state that they have worked 250 miles! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

BTW please fill in a bit more of your bio, as when I suggested getting the H/H to me, you might have been in South America or somewhere as just as exotic. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Bio - wondered what you were talking about until I read on.

Will start filling it in now - no sailing tonight that's for sure.

Yes it does have a mast inspite of the pushpit mounted monstrosity- I will be changing that for sure. Can't figure out how a radio on 1 Watt can beat a H/H on 5Watts, but there you go.

Lovely clinker built old girl - not a folkboat but just as pretty.
