Question on seeking a Jeanneau 805 Leader

Yes, there’s the risk factor. I guess a survey would help if you could find a trusted and English speaking surveyor. Some boats are dry docked on sticks and I wonder how they could test the engine/drivetrain etc. I doubt they would initiate a sea test from this state of storage.
If you’re selling a boat you surely expect a surveyor and sea trial as part of the process. I think there’s potential for bargains to be had from Europe, albeit some effort involved.

The highest ever euro to sterling was £1.00 = €1.75
Today £1.00 = €0.86
Need to factor in getting it back, the smaller the boat the higher the percentage of transport coats against purchase price of boat. ?
Not that long ago you could save considerable sums even after shipping , compared to similar boats listed in UK .
Positives were boats usually better specced but lack of care of some boats down in the Med due to absentee boat owners.
Sun bleached hull and interior or green mould and water damaged interior, choice was yours.

You got that the wrong way round
£1 = €1.16 (€1 = £0.86)

Recently I was looking at a Bayliner 285 and costed the shipping from Nice to Rotterdam and that came out at £6k

These are lovely boats and I have seen Nicks in action and it is incredible. If you cant get one of these look at the Sealine S23, S24 or S25 they are also very good indeed

Good to know! Thanks! Brexit hasn’t helped matters as I can only buy within the UK. Otherwise you now have to pay VAT and duty. I’ll keep my eyes peeled! Can I ask one thing... the place I’m looking to keep it has no shore power, do you think that’s an issue for not having tube heaters in winter? (with damp and mould)
we looked all over the place and ours came up on the Thames in Staines. Don't hang about as I drove up the day it came on the market and the brokers had 10 or more calls about it whilst I was looking over the paperwork. We only had a sedate pootle test run up the Thames so was concerned about possible overheating etc We treated ours with a Rydlyme engine flush as soon as we got her to Southampton and thankfully all was well. Tube heaters would be great but I too haven't got shore power but I'm waiting to get back into ours to see how she is, though I'm sure she will be fine. Whereabouts are you thinking of keeping it?

We looked at at few S23/25's they are a nice boat but the 805 is far more stable and benefits with a decent walk-around deck, that's what sold it to me

We’re planning on Tuckton area which is Christchurch Dorset. (Near Bournemouth) I feel proves are very inflated with Covid-19, which is understandable; not much else to do at present. I’ve also been thinking about a classic Sunseeker 25 XPS (1980s boat) but just concerned about the age when it comes to GRP and engine issues. Big bills and loads of hassle would really take the fun away!

I must admit we are really happy with the 805, got back onto ours a week or so ago, the engine fired in the second turn of there key, everything else was fine after 5 months of lockdown. We are just up the coast on the Beaulieu River.

The KAD43 was produced 1999-2004, hence at least 17 years old now. Having both electronics, compressor and turbo it is not a simple design.
The risk of certain parts becoming hard to source (Google ECU, compressor clutch, hour meter and more - also on this forum) should be considered.

A documented maintenance history would be nice as no used engine is better than the TLC it has received.

I don’t know why boat electrics are so unreliable! Maybe something to do with the marine environment, but if they can make aircraft that fly for years on end without crashing (mostly), I’m sure they could find a way to make an oil sensor that’s reliable.

If the quality requirement was equally high, QA was as demanding, service levels and the according cost of ownership would be accepted by boaters, I'm sure the same realiability could be achieved ??

Are you sure a KAD43 has an ecu. I thought it was similar to the kad32. Old fashioned basic diesel. :-)

Hi,

I’m seeking a Jeanneau 805 Leader which came with a variety of engines. I wish to get a diesel which has 2 options: Volvo Penta KAD43 (old turbo charged V6 diesel) or a more modern and economical Volvo Penta D4. (In-line 4 cylinder). The D4 version is rarer and I wondered if anyone knows the years that it was produced with this engine on this boat?

If anyone is selling one, please let me know. Or a Doral 250. Thanks!
Mark
You could ask Nick , he is doing so well he may be upgrading .

Sorry for not being clear (Volvo call their systems EDC and EVC whereas ECU is generic for Engine Management Unit - my bad). My neighbour has a Bavaria with twin 43's (allegedly 2004) and they have a CAN-bus, but earlier versions might not.

Volvo had this part (obsolete now)

The Sealine S23/S25 is a nice boat, but substantially smaller - shorter and narrower. In the cockpit for example, you'll fit four people around the table, in the 805 you'll almost double that. Same with the engine, the S23/S25 has the little KAD 32 or D3, the 805 a KAD 43 or D4.

The S28 is closer to the size (although probably slightly bigger).

Hi Flip272

I am very interested in purchasing a Leader 805. Would there be any chance in meeting you and your boat to extract some advice?

I live very locally to Beaulieu, member of the BRSC.

I can't find a way to send you a PM.

Many thanks, Guy McNair-Wilson

Hi Guy of course be happy to share some knowledge of these boats, ping me your e-mail and I'll get in contact. I think as you have only posted one message you don't get access to PM people yet so you may need to pop it into this thread and once I have contacted you delete it.

regards Phil
