Question for Diesel Engr\'s ...

Perkins 4-107

During running engine started making loud CLACKING noise seemed in time with rpm ...

Stopped engine ...

Left for a while and restarted - engine still made CLACKING sound but now full revs with no throttle control.

Trucked boat to home and later ran engine and all seemed fine ... slight hunting on engine speed at tick-over .. but basically all appeared ok.
Ran engine 3 times ... one time for reasonable length over 1/2 hour ... (each time with hose into cooling water intake ...)

So boat stands winter ... This weekend as we approach lift-in ... I try engine again to make sure ... No CLACKING sound but throttle doesn't work .. lever on pump moves ... but engine just stays at about 1/2 revs ...

Any ideas ? I have local Russian / Latvian engr due today ... but would like any ideas / thoughts from here ....

Re: Question for Diesel Engr\'s ...

Difficult to diagnose anything without being there but sounds like it might be a fuel pump problem.

Re: Question for Diesel Engr\'s ...

If injectors are not as clean as they should be, rather than a fine mist being produced a drip of diesel results. This does not burn slowly as the mist does but rapidly when it produces a knock. This could explain your noise.

The erratic speed is probably connected to a fuel pump problem.

A lot of the troubles with diesel fuel injection are related to dirt. Both of these problems could be caused in this way. Have you disturbed some sludge or has water frozen and done the same at the bottom of your tank?

Re: Question for Diesel Engr\'s ...

I had exactly the same yesterday and your description of 'clacking' is a good description...i will follow this thread with interest ps. mine was intermittent?

Re: Question for Diesel Engr\'s ...

The lack of proper throttle control of engine speed indicates an injection pump problem affecting the fuel flow control. Full revs with no control is particularly worrying but it probably wont do that under load.

Try listening with a "listening stick" or an engineers stethoscope to determine the source of the clacking noise.

Nigel,

Is it a clack or a very loud rattle? As in one cylinder or all 4?

Reason I ask is we had a Sierra TD doing a "rattle" on start up - turned out to be the pump stuck on full advance giving a horrible diesel knock at small throttle openings. It had being lying idle for a few months and was being pressed back into service. We unstuck the pump innards with a couple of cans of FORTE diesel treatment. But the damage was done, it broke the crank shortly after......

Anyroads the pump innards are stuck on yours. Get it overhauled or replace it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Question for Diesel Engr\'s ...

Burning the engine oil comes to mind!

A broken piston ring allowing hot oil into the piston might allow the engine to 'do' its own thing.

Hopefully its a fuel pump problem which is more affordable to remedy.

Good luck.

Nigel, if you need a pump I have one for this engine which was reconed some years ago but never used. Let me know if you want it.

Mmmm I did mention "Clacking" has stopped ... engine actually runs nice sound etc. but no throttle !

I spoke with the eng'r who fitted the engine some 3 yr back ..it was a 2nd hand job then - but excellent runner.

We went through it possibly running on sump oil (if diesel had got in there etc.) - but discounted that as the engine stops ok on the stop button.

The clacking has stopped - we only had it the one day in UK before boat came here ... he reckons that was fuel pump basically throwing hand in ...

No throttle control - Fuel pump after clacking sound of destruction internally ... but as he says it could actually be a simple small item in there ... or a complete failure of the pump.
