Hi

A friend of mine owns the engine above which appears to have a small crack in the exhaust manifold water jacket. It's leaking a little and we're hoping that we can do a weld repair. I believe that the bulk of the jacket is cast alloy.

Has anyone else had this problem and was a weld repair successful?
Can anyone tell me the year of manufacture?
Who would you recommend for the supply of gaskets etc?
Are any special tools required?

My friend is a self confessed 'nugget' when it comes to anything on a computer so he's asked me to ask on his behalf.

Many thanks

If you go to Volvo pent web site you will get time of production

Spares are getting extinct the engine is a peugot tractor unit marinised by Volvo one of the first light weight high output engines But generally considered beyond repairing

There were two very different application
A light high performance short life easily nackered warped heads etc
B low output displacement or yacht aux with very long life but still subject to corrosion

Don't mix it with later 32 which is a totally diff beast

cracked exhaust

I would suggest you remove the exhaust and inspect it thoroughly. I suspected mine had a leak and it was as rotten as a pear!. My boat is 1972 and the exhaust is fabricated on both engines so I assume thisis how they were originaly supplied. When I cut the bottom of, the exhaust is a square box section that had corroded through in many places. thiswas visible through the ports. thishad allowed the sea water in the manifold to attack the head - which is also off now!
Keypart have them for about £1700, but I have asked a local welding company to make one for me and they will use stainless for the exhaust parts. The welding will not give a flush face so It willrequire a surface grind as well. Still wont be cheap but we are talking hundreds not thousands. Also found the injection elbow badly cracked. confirms my low opinion of Volvo designers! keypart do a de-coke set for £300
Hope you get sorted

I have two of these heaps and would love to get rid of them,Anyway, I have the address of a guy that has a couple of old MD32As that i getsome spare off.If you want the email ill PM you with it.There are still some spares to be had but generally not new ones,As previously said you can get gasket sets and the like but you could struggle for other bits.My port Engine wont play for more than a couple of weeks without spitting the dummy out.Im looking forward to using them as new mooring weights.
