"unattended fishing gear in respect of which a surface mark is employed must show a dan buoy or container with flag, whichever must be fitted with a radar reflector and have the identity of the laying vessel clearly displayed."

I can hear the complaints in the Britannia Inn now.

'ow do they expect 'e to fit a radar reflector to a used 5 litre vinegar bottle?

Daft innit?

I'm certainly in favour of adopting a standard (black) pot marker with a 2 metre high flag on it but an effective radar reflector? The main reason that some fishermen don't mark TOO visibly (& again I don't condone it on safety grounds) is so that nobody comes along and steals their valuable pots and catch. Apart from that, the idea of having hundreds of new radar targets all over the place is too rediculous to be taken seriously.

I wonder, does QHM talk to ABP? or am I being totally silly? It would be good if they could work in concert on this one, despite radar replectors being a little OTT.

" in respect of which a surface mark is employed". So the locals simply remove the mark and present us with even more of a problem! There are stretches round Lands End where they have done exactly this, presumably because of some problem of theft amongst the fishing community.

Why cant they just ban then altogether from harbours and buoyed out channels?

It occurs to me that it is quite rare to see pot markers at all in the Eastern Solent (i.e. the "Dockyard port of Portsmouth"). I don't know if that is because there is too much traffic, or the fishing is poor, or QHM already patrols the area effectively
