QAB

Hey

I don't berth in QAB am in Sutton Harbour but chartered three boats from there last year. My only observations are that it seems quite tight within the marina itself and when the wind is blowing mooring can get a bit interesting. We had chartered two 40ft'ers and a 38ft'er.

Not sure that helps but that is my two pence worth. :)

we were berthed there but moved out. Three reasons:

1) Yes it can be bouncy and you'll see that even in the quietest conditions there can be a rolling swell in the marina; particularly in the SW corner on the pontoon behind the breakwater/wavescreen.

2) The loo and showers were very poor though I think they're being upgraded now.

3) it's rather isolated from the city of Plymouth for pubs and restaurants. Depending on preferences that might be a good thing of course, but it's a grim walk from QAB in to the Barbican if the bridge over the Sutton Harbour lock is closed which it is 21.00 to 04.00 daily. Not great for returning after the pub/dinner/theatre.

Positives are:

1) Good car parking

2) good staff

3) boatyard attached to the marina.

Can second the "bounciness" issue.

Thirded. I was on the westmost-but-one finger behind the wavescreen for a couple of months a couple of years ago. Not as bad Premier Marina Gosport but a decent blow sometimes resulted in dents in boats which weren't tied up tightly. Further in is probably more comfortable.

There's not stuff loads of room between the finger berths (either direction) but I've seen worse. Toilets/Showers rather unimpressive (although I haven't been there since July) but boaty facilities second to none: Can't think of anywhere better if you're working on the boat (or getting other people to work on it). If they don't have it on site, it's within walking distance.

The walk round from the barbican if you miss the bridge isn't as bad as it used to be: You seem to be able to walk most of the way round sutton harbour now without going via the road. Perhaps a small price to pay for having Yacht Parts / Marine Bazaar / Aquafax in walking distance.

Wouldn't be my choice for a visit but excellent for a refit

Used to be in there, it can indeed be quite bouncy in a good southerly, not a lot of shelter.
Plus, we found it quite noisy at weekends if breeze is from the Barbican direction.
Add to that, the longish walk to get to any decent pub etc.

Been in YH for a couple of years now & much prefer it :)

What, Not keen on going back to PYH??

:D

You dont get the same long rolling swell... but its quite uncomfortable at times as the wall doesnt seem to stop diddly... and it can be quite tight if there is a breeze... I think if your going in there you might as well go inside sutton harbour....

Oh, and they get more visitors... and I think there are more charter boats in there as well...... So you would have to redeploy the anchor....

PYH ?? Not likely not as long as the Scots character is employed there . With his attitude towards customers I'm surprised anyone berths there .

Because of our nomadic lifestyle MDL seems a good bet with "freedom berthing" and "outlook" free berthing .

make sure you're off cruising for any big events like the Fastnet that might be hosted in QAB. resident boats can be turfed out for the duration and have to find their own temporary berth elsewhere.

Sutton is better all round.

To be fair to QAB there is a pontoon which when you berth there you agree to vacate for a certain period. The berthing costs are thus reduced.
I do agree Sutton is much better and with facilities second to none.
