I know! It's been out on deck all summer in the sun (and, if I'm honest, last year as well) and I assume that it is UV degradation. Or is it something else?

The question is: is that the end or is there something I can do to give it another - non-sticky - lease of life?

I am having a UV cover made for it so in future, it, or its replacement, can be left out on deck and easily lashed down, with impunity.

I had a (very) old Dunlop dinghy with the same problem. every cleaning agent I tried just seemed to make things worse. In the end I chucked it and bought an XW. These PVC type dinghies don't last like the neoprene Avons. I"m now on my third.

It seems to depend upon the exact type of PVC used. My Quicksilver has been in the Med for ten years and has no stickiness whatsoever on the tubes but the airdeck became unusable after five. It was replaced under guarantee by another type that apparently does not degrade. We had no success in trying to clean or arrest the stickiness.

Gone just like my three year old seago270. A complete load of rubbish and waste of money.
I was recommended to use Cif like cleaner ,it works ok but is hard work and soon gets sticky again .
I will now go back to my ageing Tinker Tramp which it replaced. It must be near 30 years old but it has no patches and definitely no stickiness .

Once again use acetone , yes it does smear the stickiness you just have to do a small area at a time , gif also will help , once you remove it bush some silicon oil on it , just don't use it till it dry or you will be on your back side , it will come back unless you made or have a cover made for it .

Thanks for the silicon tip . Not familiar with silicon oil ,other than the stuff in a spray can though do you know a uk trade name ?

Odd my Seago which has been used and abused including at at least three seasons left out is perfectly OK after 8 years?

My Seago 270 is now 5 years old but only the Seago logo at the bow is sticky, rest is OK. I have tried a few solvents but not tried Acetone yet. Have you talked to Seago and see what they say.

This stickiness isn't reserved for Dinghys only, I had it badly on a pair of Binnoculars, I goggled this problem and found this common on bins, mine wasn't a cheap pair either, anyway from memory I'm thinking I used white spirit or petrol, that cured it never returned

Funny that, I had a dynamo-type torch in the saloon, after only two seasons the rubber handle became extremely sticky and the torch had to be dumped. I doubt if the torch ever saw any UV but it has been fairly warm on a shelf immediately below the deck in Greece.

To remove the tack suface you need lots of small white rage, sythetic free, an old cotton sheet is good.

The trick is to wet a small area, wipe with acetone on a claen rag, do not be tempted to go too big or the cloth will just spread the problem, so small area fresh cloth.

Next start another area, do not overlap the last spot for at least 10 minutes.

When finished allow to fully dry, next day apply a sutable polish.

Good luck and fair winds. :)

Don't use acetone. What you want is uPVC solvent from Toolstation. Give it a wipe over with that, and all the sticky comes off easily.

Also good for fenders and stern bump strips.

I have a Plastimo dinghy that after only one season has a sticky Logo Patch at the bows. I think I will clean it and then paint the patch!
