Hello,
Would you get your braided hose from such as B&Q.?

Do you think it's the same quality as a swindlery.?
It is "only" for the bilge pump piping, but even so, it is after all under suction, so equally critical.
I am tired of all my boat bits coming from Norfolk, been to the DHL depot so much, they think I work there.

thx
Howard

Compare the wall thickness !

Pretty sure its not as thick as the stuff I have had from a laboratory suppliers but I may be wrong

I source as much as possible from 'non-marine' outlets so would have no qualms about B & Q. Braided hose is not v good for suction use, corrugated is what you need on the sucking side. Braided on delivery side.

I'm no great fan of B&Q per se, but its horses for courses. Much of what is offered in chandlers comes off the same lorry as the B&Q stuff but the mark-up is greater. That is to say, I have my doubts about the suitability of much of the stuff found in the chandlers.

I came to the conclusion that you may as well try the stuff you can source locally, so long as it's not a particularly critical installation. For bilge pumps, I've always found braided hose satisfactory, so long as it isn't forced into a tight turn, which starts the collapse before you apply any suction.

In a similar vein, I discovered that the only direct replacement for the "brass" hinges on the locker lids in the saloon come from B&Q - brassed steel, unfortunately (same as the originals). I was replacing thirty year old hinges, so I guess the new ones will see me out! Likewise I have used cheap gate valves on skin fittings, but I replaced them annually for a couple of pounds each from the plumbers merchants. If you look in the Vetus or Plastimo catalogues, you will find them offering the same spec for underwater use with no mention of the short lifespan to be expected!

Suction hose

Suction hose should be used rather than braided as it may collapse. Also it won't readily kink so installation is simpler.

The quality isn't necessarily linked to the retailer or the price.:)

Years ago I used to run a hydraulic hose company with my father. If there is a similar company locally you may find them much cheaper. We used to sell braided hose for a fraction of the cost of someone like B & Q over the trade counter. This is also true for just about any hydraulic or fuel hose and fittings. We used to do a lot with small boat oweners.
