Would highly reccommend the Boat Data Book by Ian Nicolson as this besides listing a good put to sea list will also give you alot of information from ground tackle to quantity of anti fouling required for your hull and lots of formulas and conversions .. just bought it as a companion to my new boat!/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: there is safe and there is nervous

I know... I was straying. I just couldn't resist the vision of this family bound up like Michelin men in individual immersion suits, strapped downby their safety lines, lifejackets on, epirbs ready for the off, liferaft ready to launch, bobbing about in clear weather waiting for the worst to happen. It would make me want to take up golf.

If anyone mentioned engine spares, I missed it, but make sure you've got fuel filters, fan belts, impellor, etc and the tools to change 'em, or better do it before you go - and still take the spares!

The advice given above re: RNLI sea check is very good. It's totally free and if you explain to the advisor what you are intending he/she will be more than helpful.
best regards

I know the original post was for safety equipment, but maybe food/groceries qualify. Whatever, my wife and I usually go away for weeks at a time and sorting out needs for grocery shopping before going was always a chore. Using a number of sources I built a database which we use as a shopping list prompt, oriented to our needs, and find it makes the job very easy.

If anyone wants a copy of a printout of the list (over 350 items) to use as a basis for your own needs, please feel happy to PM me and I will email you a PDF file of the printout check list we use (remember to include your email address, which I undertake not to share and to delete it off my system once the file has been sent to you). If you would like it as a MSAccess table or in an MSExcel spreadsheet in order to build on it, let me know and I will see what I can manage.

Haven't things moved on a lot over the years. As a youngster used to sail a 16' dayboat from Newton Ferrers to Salcombe without either a dry suit or an EPIRB. I seem to remember sailing a Firefly round for the regatta as well, but there were probably a group of us going together for that one.

Used to sail 18'6 Caprice cross channel Langstone to Cherbourg and Channel Islands.

Nav eqpt an ex RAF Grid Compass and hand held torch to see it nighttime, long wave radio for shipping forecast and Seafarer Mk 1 echo sounder (only worked on Ever Ready 9v batteries - Vidor ones no use).

Things have changed. I did carry two lifejackets, two red flares and a white one. 4hp Mercury LS outboard as auxiliary and to drive Avon Redstart. Charts and tidal atlas. Thats all.

Do I recall correctly that Uffa Fox cross channeled in a 14 footer (International 14?). Don't recall how frequently though.

Perhaps someone remembers more.
