Purchase of licenced boat

A friend (yes, not me!) has purchased a boat which has a 2015 licence on it.

Does this licence transfer with the boat?

It does...iirc they will only refund if the boat leaves the Thames

I think it only 'transfers' if you don't tell the EA until the end of the season.

Prof, we read that but it talks from the sellers point of view (ie. redeeming our licence or transferring it to another boat you have bought) it does not talk about it from the boat purchasers point of view.

Is the seller getting another boat?

Yes, they bought an electric boat but never discussed the licence on the old boat when it was sold. It was described (verbally) as licenced and BSS certified

*If you sell your boat and it remains on the waterway, you should include the value of your registration in the sale cost.

Stays with the boat, it is a licence for the boat to be on the thames.

The seller has a duty to inform the EA of the change of ownership by completing the form on the original document and returning the existing plate. The EA will then issue a new registration plate to the new owner for the rest of the current year:

Change of ownership
If you sell your boat, it is your responsibility to notify us of the change of ownership in writing. You must provide us with the name and address of the person to whom ownership has transferred.
Until you do so, you remain the legal owner of the boat and are therefore responsible for it. This means you are still responsible for registering it and paying any charges due

If the seller did not do this I would suggest that the buyer inform the EA of the change of ownership. The seller cannot get a refund and the new owner will get the benefit of the registration already paid until the end of the current period.
