pump seals

Today I bought two seals for my water pump.... but as water is on one side and oil on the other I am confused which way to insert them.... I cannot recall how the originals were fitted.

two seals in nitrile cost me €10 euros from a local seal supplier I also learned how to read a seal by the numbering these are numbered 28147 so 28mm outside 14mm shaft, 7mm thickness.... seemingly the ones that I removed were an even cheaper material at about 3 euros for the pair...

vaguely recall paying much more from volvo for my last boat....
 
I don't know the design of your pump, but as a rule of a thumb: the "lip" on the hole should be on side of higher pressure.
 
OMG! Don't get it wrong.

That brings back memories of my effort in installing seals in the axles of my VW Beetle. I couldn't understand why the brake shoes were constantly saturated in oil.

I'm sure there will be an expert here who can help.

The side with the garter spring faces the fluid it is sealing so that the pressure of the fluid is" helping" the spring to keep the lip tight against the shaft.

So with your pump they face opposite ways , closed sides facing each other, spring sides facing water and oil.

I trust you have bought seals with stainless steel springs , for the water seal at least, or you will doing the job again very soon.

I live 150 km from the city so I don a lot of shopping online. I've been buying SKF seals from Bearingwarehouseltd in the UK. They've been pretty good but there are a couple of seals they could not supply. Is there another big supplier I should deal with as an alternative?

Make sure that you don’t obscure the telltale hole or slots
So with your pump they face opposite ways , closed sides facing each other, spring sides facing water and oil.

thanks for that...... seems obvious now....

was not able to get the s/s version but as the last one was at least 10 years old with 5 seasons and really only gave way whilst the boat was laid up I am happy enough to get this season out of the non s/s vesrion... a dolop of grease and all should be well, it is only a half hour job to change so I am sure twill be fine..

boat moves a step closer to water........(but more steps appear over the horizon)

If the springs in the ones you are removing are still intact fit the old springs into the new seals.

You could also check the springs with a magnet to see if they are stainless or non steel.

I think I noticed on the Simply Bearings web site that it is possible to buy the stainless garter springs separately . It might be worth checking that out and, if I am right, getting stainless springs for the seals you have.
 
You might be correct but life is about compromise... the engine will be together and tested again tomorrow and that is the engine room finished till she is launched, the new seals will last the season... in fact they are viton not nitrile ...

plenty more to be done,,,, in other departments....

But when the springs fail if you have some stainless ones you will able to pop them in then your pump should be good for a a few more years rather than just a season. Assuming that is you have replaced the impeller and not put the old one back and that the bearings are Ok and the shaft not worn.

Try www.bearingsrus.co.uk - HWMO has used them for years, never failed to supply the correct items (yet). Viton seals c/w ss springs, C1 bearings (they can even supply ss bearings if one was so minded.
