Prout Quest 31

I'm looking at changing over to a cat from mono, looking at either Prout or HT, any advice views

Had a Prout Quest 31 for a while, lots of room and very comfy to spend time aboard. That one has so far been the only boat that the mrs has really liked.
Out of the two I would go for the Prout, this does not mean that the HT is not worth consideration, mooring costs would be cheaper for a start.

I had a Quest for 7 years and like Pete, it is the only boat that my wife really liked.

There are a lot of pros and cons which would take up pages to type out. But basically, with a cruising cat you sacrifice sailing enjoyment for accommodation and comfort so the choice very much depends on what sort of sailing you do. I've gone back to a mono because I like a bit of racing and my sailing is mostly local day sailing. If I were to go liveaboard or long term cruising I would instantly go back to a cat.

The Quest was arguably the best cat Prout ever made or so the members of the Prout family I met said. As the range developed into the Event, the boats got heavier and less performing. Construction of the Quest was good ( osmosis prone) but you need to watch for kit boats. Factory builds are better and usually a bit more expensive. The drive leg is agricultural but quite effective.

The HT is I believe an even earlier design with lots of rocker and a tendency to hobby horse. A very safe boat like the Quest but even less performance.

If you want to pm me your land line number I will happily phone you to answer any questions

The Snowgoose is bigger but its a question of cost as well.
I'm thinking of selling mine because she is bigger than I need & ,at times, a bit tricky when single handed in a marina & I don't live aboard. I shall have a smaller cat.

I've a got a 33

I have got a Prout Quest 33 CS - I like it but have to get used to being left behind by modern mono when going to Windward.

Feels VERY safe and reliable. I love the space and the kingsize bed in a 33 footer. AND another 5 berths, full size chart table and room for a dinner party for 6 on the foredeck. The Staysail really helps her point - I haven't set mine up on roller furling yet but it is on the to do list.

As other posters, watch out for home builds but, they vary some would have been done really well.

If you get to the survey stage look out for Osmosis in the hulls (INSIDE) due to the water tanks being in the keels. Mine has a minor case but reckon it will be 30 years more before she sinks - it's quite normal/common.

As with all cats they are weight dependant - not filling the tanks buy me a least 3/4 of a knot at top end speed.

But lived and cruised on mine for 3 months - no sweat at all.

Feel free to PM with specific questions and I can give you a number if you fancy a chat.

Oh and seconding for popping over to Emsworth and browing around - loads to see side by side and make you own mind up
