The lagoon impinges on the River Neath and Monkstone CSC. It also has an effect on ships entering the R Neath. Modelling is all very well but the entrance to the R Neath is difficult enough without the proposed changes.
The power generation will only be feasible if the Government continues to subsidise the price of energy produced in this way. I understand that the developers are selling shares to fund the project.
They modelled Royal Portbury as well and showed that it would never require dredging. It turns out to need the removal of several million tonnes per year. Chatting with an oceanographer friend, he told me there is no established method of modelling silting yet.
Despite my cynicism over that and a few other points, I really hope it can be made to work. Tidal power is the future, or at least it should be.
