Propeller protection spray

I am sure I saw a thread on here about a product, a sort of lacquer, that you spray on your props and it helps to keep the barnacles off them.

Can anyone point me in the direction of either the thread or the spray?

Does it work though, I know a few folks were discussing this topic but are there any updates on performance on 25 knt planning boats.

Would be interested to hear as my SS props are thoroughly covered in green hairy stuff lol

I used this TK spray last October on my bronze prop and s/s trim tabs, and when the boat was lifted last Monday for survey, there was a layer of thin scale on both, with a few barnacles but, overall, I would say they were in better condition than previous years when I didn't use anything on them.......the boat is kept in Swanwick Marina, River Hamble.

i always slap a load of vaseline all over mine, this year after being in for 2 yrs they had no growth on them at all
but they always come out a black colour. there was still traces of vaseline on them. mine is only a 7 knot boat thou.

JFM has reported excellent results on M2, so I have applied to Rafiki. Haven't lifted her since the application, so cannot comment yet on suitability.

I have always been unimpressed by International Trilux ... 8 months static in Brittany:

so I tried TK this year.

I applied International to the top of the drive, left a 1" untreated gap and sprayed TK below that line.

Five weeks later (after running over a rope :ambivalence I saw what appears to be slime/growth on the lower half.

Oh dear.

I understand the well established cure for seasickness works very well at keeping growth of propellors - leave the boat under an apple tree.

Anyhow I am trying out Hammerite Special metal primer this year - everything else I have have tried has been useless, but the report i read on various prop anti fouls a while back showed no growth at all on the aforementioned primer used as a base for the products under test.

For me this years' experiment was a good layer of Valvoline Tectyl Multi Purpose 506 for car body Antirust treatment, applied by brush.

No evidence yet, but will report back when lifted, if not before then by end of season.

Another endorsement for TK Line, really made a difference to my props, shafts and rudders with the additional benefit of prolonging the life of the anodes.

Boat was out last week for clean and anti fowl ,we had used too tins of the TK spray on props, shafts end of last season, have to say complete waste of money, not impressed at all ,

Just to add in fairness the boat has had very little use this season due to having to weight for injectors to be refurbished,

if the original thread was dug up I was the person suggesting TK Line clear a/f to fellow forumites... but there was no warranty given or implied..

In previous years I had firstly used nothing and had terrible results, then used propshield and not only had terrible results but it was bloody awful stuff to apply, and then I spotted a tin of this stuff in the chandlery and decided to give it a go. After the previous years tedium of applying propshield spray painting the prop with TK Line was a joy, so easy and left the prop with a beautiful coat of clear lacquer (a joy to an OCD boat prep'er). End of the season a bit of slime which was jet washed off upon lift out, and it left the prop with a light coating of lime scale which was quick and easy to polish off... I don't claim is a miracle cure, but I think all prop and underwater gear "protectors" are never going to be up to much as what we are asking them to do is a tough job to say the least! I still think this stuff is easy and quick to apply, pretty cheap and the best of a bad lot....

We have just pulled the boat out to have a trim tab repaired, used TK in Jan, very little use & props + outdrives are virtually spotless. Took her out last weekend for the 1st time in months (due to work & kids doing maths degrees) & she did 35knts with a dodgy trim tab, pretty much on her side. Top speed is 38 clean, so a combination of coppercoat & TK works for us.

Just a follow-up on the Tectyl test. Didn't seem to do anything better than previous years of no treatment, so not recommended

The hull came out with a slight dark slime(ish) layer. A swift wash by pressure washer cleared all off, so happy with the antifouling.
