Still no name chosen.

She is now undercover in a somewhat ramshackle (read cheap!) boatyard tent that is close to home.

The engines I bought with the boat have never been in her before, so there is some work to do to them and to the boat.

That looks a beautiful classic boat. Mind you those engines look Huge for such a craft.

How long do you anticipate all the work will take

Straight 6, litre a jug engines are pretty much the standard in Fairey boats. These are 210hp, she should clear 30 knots.

Hope to be up and running early summer.
 
looks great ,and will go like shite ,so any photos of inside ,and so lucky to find inside tent is it costly looks on the broards where r u based .r

yeah yeah, and I thought my rebuilt would be 6months... or do you imply that it took 4yrs (and counting) due to me posting on the forum? :p

What I'm saying is that it would be nice to have some pics as it's highly unlikely some of us here will see her floating in the Solent!

V, I know, I too would like photos, but I don't believe Ben's a massive photo/thread kind a guy, so I won't hold my breath!

Ha! no, I don't generally go. But no, I am sure we will see BB this year.

Interesting update about old gaffers, I know the shops/pubs like it, but do know a number of the residents who don't... so that gives them a years breather between events!

It looks like the regatta is going ahead but not with the street entertainment which is a shame as it's a great event.... Anyway back to the boat.. My very first boat was a president huntsman which looks very similar to the OP's. 3ft long and radio controlled.

I have the manuals if you want to take copies of the hard versions or some that I have on pdf let me know.

The gearbox oil coolers are missing the hydraulic hoses. I would make sure the connections into the gearboxes are sealed as you do not want dirt getting inside them.
 
Trial fitted an engine today, all good.

Need some 35mm high ally blocks under the front mounts that bring the vertical axis of the AVM aft by 44mm and its all good.

Not much headroom above the top of the header tank, that might need a mod.

what's the access like on the outside of the engines when fit, doesn't look good, or is there access from the aft cabin via removable panels or whatnot?

Looks good, so the crane operator did turn up, and didn't drop it through the bottom..

The offer of use of our toolroom still stands and we've loads of alloy offcuts about, even better get one of your CAD jockeys to draw up what you want, send it over and we'll put them up on a machine for you [we use Solidworks -> Hypermill]

Sounds like a great offer!

As your engines were originally keel cooled when they came out of Darlington and header tanks added later possibly slightly larger C Series header tanks.

There are three iterations of B header tank plus the Thornycroft one.

#1 was very early welded mild steel 1/4 tank, which had inadequate draw down capacity and Darlington only used on 4B/4BT marine engines.

#2 was a simple welded affair with thick bottom, bracket on to front of head and a simple strap on to the top of the head. This tank was OK however could suffer from fatigue cracking around the welded on bracket over time.

#3 This tank was upgrade of type 2, created by Indiana backwoods blacksmith. Consists of steel base plate with one bracket off front of head, no additional head strap. Steel tank with real thick base tapped to take four mounting bolts to secure it to the base. All very crude however effective. This tank is taller than type #2 because of the design, coupled to the fact that I suspect you may have C Series tank.

Last option was the real neat Thornycroft cast alloy tank.

Looking at the offer from Scrarron I think I may be able locate CAD drawing of Type 3 tank design which I suspect you have, use your existing steel base bracket and have alloy tank created to fit. ASAP supplies sell screw in filler neck to take pressure cap which would only require threaded boss welded inside the top of the tank.
