The profile picture of many regular posters doesn't show correctly. Because of the way Internet Explorer and Netscape work, people can usually see their own picture even if it has a bad URL, so are presumably unaware of this. During the last three days I've kept a list among those posting on Scuttlebutt and PBO which includes:
Adrian Aitchw Althorne
Becky Billship BobE
Brianrunyard Ccscott49 Clyst
Delf Depsol Halcyon
Ianwright Jimbuoy Joe_Cole
Johna Pugwash Sailorman
Johnboy2004

Guys, if you want the rest of us to see your pic, you need to sort it. Or maybe your pic IS the dreaded red X?

(If this is just a problem at my end, please someone put me right and I humbly apologise!)

Hi Andrew,
Frankly I've given up trying... Maybe I might have another go when all hope of sailing ceases during the winter.
I did ask for help but couldn't really understand what i was being told to do! ( politely)
If someone can simply write for example
1) copy a pic as a jpg file from a to B
2) press C
Etc I might have a hope
Otherwise, unless you were in Cherbourg where I'm told I made an ass of myself, I'm afraid you will have to rely on imagination. After all the Goon show was never anygood on TV was it??
Cheers Bob E..

It is a shame that you have not said anything before if it is generally the case that pics cannot be seen by others. My pic has been there for three years at least. Can we have guidance on the form of URL as I have looked at the FAQs and help.
Also can another confirm lack of picture.

Bob,

You are missing all of the info that tells the web browser where you have located your pic.

http://P32700a9.jpg

It needs to be something like

http://www.mysite.com/myfolder/P32700a9.jpg

Have you plonked it somewhere online?

Little tip for everyone -- if you cut and paste the address you use in your profile into a web browser and it doesn't work, then it won't work here either. Four reasons:

a) file not saved a JPEG format (and named with .jpg ending) or GIF format (and named with .gif ending)

b) file not hosted on the web somewhere (we cannot view pics on your PC)

c) address is wrong -- it should show the route to your pic on ther web (and not end with .html because we can only show pics not pages)

d) all of the above correct but your chosen host doesn't allow other sites to cherry pick images.

Not a full explanation but hope it helps a bit.

John

Just had a quick check, the address you have in there is:

C:/Sailing/Kalivala/Brochure_2a.jpg

That's pointing to your C drive on your PC -- there's no way of pulling the image from that from anyone outside of your PC, although you are probably seeing it okay on your machine and so wouldn't have known.

You need to get the pic on the web and it will then have an address something like:

http://www.mychosensite.com/Sailing/Kalivala/Brochure_2a.jpg

if, for example, the pic resides within a folder called Kalivala which in turn is within a folder called Sailing on that website.

Not that all addresses are case sensitive on our servers.

John, take a look at...

You need to store your profile pic somewhere on the internet, rather than on your computer. Take a look at boatsontheweb, where there's a simple free storage facility for profile pics.

Thanks Kim seems too much bother. Perhaps you should consider having an appropriate area attached to the site.

I'm with you on this one after reading Kims post(s) I would have to say I haven't got a clue wot he's talking about (was he speaking English?)

I think I'll remain being seen in name and not face.

S'dead easy. For your mugshot to appear alongside your post it has to be somewhere where YBWs computer can suck it up from. It can't suck it off of your computer. Therefore if you want your pic to appear you have to park it somewhere that YBW can suck from. Which, to all in tents and porpoises, means on a website.

So park your pic on a website (lots ofem offer free pic storage). Then open that web page, right click your mouse over your pic and your PC (Mac man speaking here, so maybe slightly wrong) will offer to open the pic in a new page. Make it do this. Then copy the web address from the top of the new page and paste it into your profile on YBW user options page.

And Roberta's your aunt.

I\'ve lost my virginity.

I lead a sheltered life and I've never been named and shamed before, so this is a first for me!

Is it working now?
