I bought a gas kicker from Proctor early 97 and suffice it to say that the gas part of it is knackered. Speaking to the guy who used to work for Proctors (eventualy tracking him down) it turns out that the gas kickers used ordinary car gas struts similar to the ones on car boots. Not marinised in any way so they corrode like buggery and eventualy give up the ghost all together.

I wouldn't mind but it cost me £500 !

I can't remember the detail. but some time ago there was a posting on this forum where someone used the gas strut off a wrecked Sierra estate.

It might be worth trying.

Gee - they must be strong to close the boot- my strut doesnt budge until it has 4000 Kg on it!

Just transporting it back to get it serviced (I had a weeping oil seal) was a pain as they are not allowed on aeroplanes, as they go off like missiles at altitude, so it had to be shipped by sea.
