All,

Steeling cable broke sometime over the winter and I needed to replace. Couldn't get it out while on water so brought it on land.
I managed to get the heml end out of this rack and pinion steering system (althoug it required me breaking everything!).
However, I cannot get the engine end out. It moved easly enough while steering (when not broken), bar went back and forth without issue.
When hammering out, the first 5 or so inches also we're easly through the engine clamp, however, now it wont budge any further.

Is it possible that there is not enough room for the bar to move any further and I need to take the engine off or am I missing something really obvious?
THe bar stuff turns, so it doen't feel jammed.

Had exactly that problem at the weekend on a friend's boat. It's the bend in the cable not enough room for the solid rod to come out. Had to slide engine over on transom

Thanks.

Did you have much trouble getting the bolts out? I'm tried loosening the bolts, just a quick attempt, and they wouldn't budge.

Does anybody know which steering system I can replace this with? I'm going with a Rotary Steering System this time,
but unsure of the size I need at the engine end.

Was looking at this,
VEVOR Outboard Boat Steering With 14' Steering Cable Marine Steering System 3/4'' Shaft | VEVOR EU

but I don't know what 3/4" shaft means. My engine is a 75HP
(this model - 75 • 75 MARATHON • 75 SEA PRO90 • 100 • 115 • 125 • 65/80 JETUnited States 0D283222 and Above . . . Belgium 09793577 and Above)

Can I ask how you lifted the engine, did you use a hoist or just two of you lifting it?

Put some wood beam on the ground under the skeg then once unbolted you should be able to carefully slide it over as most of the weight is on the wood. Trim the engine up a little before sitting it on the wood so it's leaning back against the transom. Would ¾" be the size of the steering tube hole ?
Once you get the steering cable out you will need to clean out the hole it goes in. I've used a length of copper pipe wrapped in abrasive. A reamer would be ideal but finding one suitable ? The steering tube is steel so it can corrode internally.

ok, thanks. I'll go down at the weekeend and try to get the botls out. I've sent my marine shop the measurements for the cable.
Cables are expensive here (Ireland) going to cost about £250 to replace! Not ideal when selling.
