I have a Cranchi Pelican 32 fitted with twin Volvo Penta D4 225hp and DPH legs.

Started engines ready to move out for lift out for annual servicing. selected reverse on stbd engine, there was a longer than usual pause before gears normally engage then warning buzzer and engine shut down. Started again and same result. I seem to recall seeing on this forum that if you quickly move the gear lever back and forth several times it clears the problem. Tried it and it seem to work at first, however as I was about to make final manoeuvre from the berth it shut down again. Panicked a bit and managed to start up again and made it to the lift out station OK.

Any ideas of what the problem is and how to sort?

Yes new shift cables req , I seem to have a gut full if new cables this week . Volvo now do a better grade cable they advise for the shift cable.

Thanks volvopaul and aquatom.

Have had a look at the cables and they seem a bit stiff so will change them.

I love this forum...so many helpful advice.....thanks.

Update.......

Just spent the afternoon trying to feed the cables from the legs to the actuators in engine bay. I just don't understand why Volvo Penta make every thing so hard for end users!!!!!!! Eventually managed get both pushed through only to find that the port cable had broken through the hose at the rear of the engine which presumably is to prevent water ingress. To change the hose would mean taking the engine out!!!!!!!!
So have injected Sikiflex into the hole by the leg and hope that will do. The hole in the hose in the engine bay is around 10 inches above the water line. Should that be OK?

If it's that much above the waterline, I wouldn't have expected a problem.

I've always changed shift cables by taping the end of the new and old together and feeding them through from the inside of the engine compartment.

Thanks. I am going to attempt to put a sleeve over the cable and hose close to where it exits the transom in the engine bay and secure it with a jubilee clip in order to be on the safe side.

Update 2.

Must have had another "senior" moment when I sealed the cable with Sikaflex in the hole on the leg where the cable routes to the actuator!!! Completely forgot that the cable needs to move in and out slightly as you turn the legs to steer...DOH!!

Luckily I am able to slide a sleeve down the existing hose in the engine bay and seal with a jubilee clip.
