Or any other VP guru!

A couple of years ago I changed the cone clutch in one of my DPE sterndrives.

According to the attached parts bulletin that I have just stumbled across, I should have removed the spring and washers from the vertical shaft.

I’ve only done about 20 hours since the change and have noticed that it does take a bit of effort to move from reverse back to neutral.

Am I likely to have done some damage to the clutch and need to replace it or can I just dissassemble and remove the spring at my next lift out?

Thanks in anticipation

I can't imagine it would damage it seeing as they have had springs in for years, but haven't come across this mod as its been a few years since I was in a DPE drive, I mostly work on DPH drives.
The spring was to offset the weight of the cone and hold it in the neutral position, so now without the spring its entire weight rests on the shift shoe. If the gear shift doesn't get any heavier I'd be tempted to wait until the next service, unless Volvopaul knows something I don't.

The spring was removed and every new cone should have the later shoe fitted at the same time , I think it's slightly wider to hold the cone central. So if you didn't fit the shoe then fit one next time .
Stiffness will be the cable so renew it as well.

I replaced the shoe with the new one at the same time so the cone and shoe were matched. I'll take the spring out when the legs come off in April.
I think you're right Paul, time for new cables too.

Cheers and thanks for input.
