Princess V62-S (Build and Project)

. If you budget £75 per light fitting you soon get to 4 grand on a 62 footer
I know next to nothing about lights but why are the fittings different? I thought LED and halogen bulbs were interchangeable? Anyway why are PYI charging extra for fittings as they would have to supply fittings for halogen bulbs anyway?

i am still waiting for the confirmation from PYI. however, i believe that they will fit a complete different System with different controls and dimmers etc versus just exchanging the halogen bulbs for LED.

will post the info once received.....

Interesting discussion. I agree that a lot of yacht builders charge huge prices for extras, and they frequently do not make an allowance for the standard peice of kit if you get them to fit an upgrade!

On the subject of a watermaker. You will probably find that the basic plumbing is fitted as standard. But you make need to consider your generator set up. A watermaker uses a lot of power. You need to check that the generator you have specified can cope when you are running watermaker and air con at the same time!

Good luck

In which case, I agree with jfm. £4k sounds reasonable. IMHO, the worst thing you could do is to engage a number of different contractors to do various jobs just because they're a few quid cheaper than PYI. This would be a nightmare to control and just end up with a blame game between them and you. IMHO you should either accept PYI's prices for everything or give the boat to an outside contractor who is responsible for all of the mods

I'd consider splitting the jobs into two, the electrical installations of one sort or another, and the painting. To link the two limits you to a small number of the biggest yards, whereas any competent marine electrical installer could do everything except the painting. Also, as the paint finish is so critical, you want to be able to choose the best painter without having to compromise.

Others on forum know better than me mike but just putting an internet LED into a halogen light fitting is a bit of a compromise. Getting the quality of LED lighting right involves optimising the whole fixture design, so better to start from scratch imho. But if the £4k is unacceptable then I agree you could just stuff internet LED bulbs into the existing fixtures and it should work reasonably well

As for your last sentence i guess Princess build the boat with halogens then their dealer rips them out and installs LED fixtures. Pretty wasteful stuff. Also the dimmers will be different though I don't know how many circuits will be involved in this case

More generally intouch, I'm looking forward to reading about your project. Thnaks for posting and please keep us updated if you have time

HRO watermakers are very nice. I haven't tried lots of brands but I was very impressed with the HRO on Match1 and have ordered another HRO on Match2 only double the size. It's worth speccing soft start on the motor (a VFD) to avoid shocking the membrane when you fire it all up. Turning the valve slowly in the e/room also avoids shocking the membrane, but much easier to do it via a VFD

great Input gents...thank you !

currently it Looks like the following:

- will have all electrical work done at PYI. including changeover to LED in Saloon, Cockpit, lower dinette and cabins.

- will have LED courtesy lights added at PYI as well. otherwise laying the electrical wires to cover transom stairs, cockput, side decks and bow area would be a nightmare if not done while building the boat. it is beyond me why PYI does not do this as Standard or at least as an Option in the pricelist.

- lumishores at factory

- painting, watermaker and a small stainless steel tank to feed the icemaker will be done aftermarket.

- Installation of stainless steel strips in rope handling area to protect paint will be aftermarket as well as boat Name backlit.stainless steel bow plates in anchor area

as for paint, i think i will be going for alexseal Sahara Gold. topsides, Garage door, platform. i might even do the Roof section. undecided yet.

jfm, I am considering the HRO Escape at 95 l/h. the water tank only has a capacity of 500 l so i guess that should suffice.
I like the Auto backflush Feature of the HRO watermaker.

i have a 200 l/h unit in my current boat that hardly sees any use......

any ideas on a good solution for some colour changing mood lighting to be installed in Cockpit and Saloon Areas ?

here is a pic of the courtesy lights i am referring to and not understanding why they dont come from the factory.

These are on the new Fairline Targa 62 GT

Sounds good

www.yachtlite.com are the top firm for name lighting

There are various good quality deck moodlights avaialbe, eg Hella, available in white as well as blue

For RGB in saloon I had an install by Energy Solutions on Match 1 and it was ok but it cost a proper arm and leg and used the same RGB LED strips (I think they're called 3528 or something like that) that you can buy for peanuts on eBay, with a controller that I didn't rate. so I think you're better with bog standard RGB light strips then an after market controller either RF or infra red. Eg this kinda thing but there are loads to choose from. Make sure imho to spec one that remembers its last setting when you power on (the one I linked to does that).

If buying RF controllers and with multiple installs on your boat you have to be careful that you could be controlling multiple zones when you press the control buttons. I have an experiment about to be done ref this point and will report back in a week or so.

AFAIK the led strip itself is waterproof so if you put the connections etc inside with sealant and have only the RGB strip outside you will be ok

If you want separate light fixtures, as opposed to strip, all on one big RGB loop with one controller, then check out Cantalupi

thank you jfm,

i am Aware of the Lighnet-5 from ES. simply too expensive for what it is and does imo.

you are very right in that light strips with a Controller/remote will be the easiest to accomplish that. I have just installed such a Setup in my 36 foot Center console dive/fish-tender. quite cool with the underwater-lights.

i am also aware of yachtlite for boat-names. am very happy with the one I had made for Gioia by PRNautica.

We've just stuffed a load of LED bulbs into our halogen fittings at home and the light output is very disappointing as well as being a colder white colour. How do you guys get round the lower lumens output of LED bulbs? Is that where the change of fittings comes in?

question on engines:

- anyone have approximate UK retail pricing on Volvo D13-900mhp vs CAT C18 1150mhp

i have the Volvo d-13 900 in my V56 and surely in that size boat they perform very well especially torque wise and are in fact incredibly smooth and QUIET.

i have been told the CAT C18 ACERT 1150 is a rather noisy power package.

would the Volvo D-13 900 be enough of an engine for the V62 or would i be lacking the additional horsepower and especially the torque curve of the C18.

i have also enquired with Princess if they could fit MAN V8 1000.

friend of mine has MAN V8-900 in a predator 62 and they are doing very well actually

i guesss it depends on how many actual led elements they have and what the rated Output is.
have a look at philips led bulbs. they come in various Output Ratings and supposed to be a warm White.

the bulbs i exchanged on my boat were sourced at the Düsseldorf boat Show from a French specialist Company. i exchanged the bulbs in my open Cockpit and had bronze-brownish glass cut into shape to fit into the Spotlight.

it gives a nice candlelight atmosphere. will take pics next week when i am out to post here.

I'd be wary of people saying an engine is noisy. Sure, AOTBE, one engine can be noiser than another one, but the real differences come from design/install of the exhaust and silencers. A good Cat install will always be quieter than a bad Volvo install, and vice versa

I have drivien Cat C12 and C32 installs for many many hours, both with big Halyard silencers, and both were Bentley smooth and quiet. I have also driven lots of hours in D12 powered Sq58 and Targa 52 - the squadron is quiet and the Targa52 is noisy because they only had space for much smaller silencers

You should hear the noise out of mine, with straight through pipes :)

I tried dozens of different GU10 LED bulbs at home. None are as nice as halogen IMO, but the Philips 2700 are the closest. 5w give reasonable light output, and they do a 7w now. I have LED most places, but stuck with halogen in the lounge
