Hi I am new to the site and have questions about a Princess 35

Steel Fuel Tanks: Do they have inspection lids and what are the lifespan ??

Steering gear : Doese anybody have a drawing for the steering gear ??

How thick is the hull ??

What is the best engine for this boat Volvo or Cummins ??

Hi I will have a go at your questions.

The tanks by now may be getting ready for replacing, it depends who made them and has the boat been properly looked after, ie fill the tanks every winter to stop condensation.

Has the boat ever been flooded and sea water penetrated the tanks from the outside, the tanks are generally good although steel, you still get probs on older boats with alloy and stainless tanks, no boat is bombproof on that side of things.

THe volvo 41 series is a good motor there are literally hundreds of thousands worldwide, cheap to service etc.

Few 35s were built with the cummind 6bt unit, they do amke a good 30knot boat with cruising in the high 20s, downside is you get oil leaks, the heatexchnagers were not that good and the complete fuel system is japanese, so it can cost for pumps and injectors, the 5.9 litre lump is good and basic engine parts are cheaper than vp.

The grp is always the right thickness in the right places on most uk built boats, especially princess, I was amazed how thich my hull was when the thruster was cut out last year, over 25mm at the bow, the hull underside was around 18mm at the stern bottom where the seacock went in for the genny outlet.

If I were looking id still have a 36 sedan anyday for the same ££££.

Blimey Paul I wouldn't fancy that job
Having crawled about hlb's bilge an engines the last couple of years.
hlb's is 89 I think
An Olienski hull
Brick Sh%te house comes to mind ref seakeeping and Hull quality

To MISTERPILOT72 --What year is your boat?
I go with Paul too
I like those 41's

The only tank I,ve seen on hlb's is the 'In flight refuelling System'

Which is deffo steel!

hlb whats yer main tanks made of?

The boat I am thinking of buying is 1990 however I am not so sure now ?

VolvoPaul, could you Private Message me please so I can ask advice ?

Dunno, MF is still going well on Volvo 41's, though would prefer cummins.

Think MF's main tanks are steel, but never seen them because of insulation. Surprisingly engines are not hard to take out. Just a big fork lift.

Princess hulls are about the best around the world. Mostly bomb proof, for a time Fairline was part of the group. Think it's not now..

The hull is good..

Rest assured

My old boat ( Sedan 36) steel tanks rusted through from the outside on the top near the engine room air in takes ie dried salt at 16 years.

If you get new tanks get a sump and drain valve fitted.

Volvo Penta 41 thousands built, very reliable.

If you have two boats identical one with Volvo Penta one with other engines of similar hp the VP boats tend to sell easier and for a better price .
