Princess 32 engine proposals

I think he means the original Volvo AQD40's 106hp which were Nissan based blocks and are notorius for cooling problems, best avoided if possible.

However agree with trying to fix originals, re-enginening never makes any financial sense at all, if the originals are knacked and beyond repair the only sensable option is a pair diesels around 130-150hp, Fords from the likes of Lancing Marine maybe a good option as they do adapters to fit the existing legs.

Outboards, axles? conversion to single engine? maybe but why?, it will become one of the those unfinished projects on Ebay that is worthless.

Interesting comment.......
Volvo TAMD 40 3.59 liter 92mm X 90mm wet liner IL6 with Bosch rotary fuel pump.
Nissan SD 33 3.246 liter 83mm X 100mm dry liner IL6 with Bosch style Diesel Kiki inline fuel pump, I think both engines weighed about the same.

Sorry I got the engine number wrong, I can't remember the correct one? bad engines anyway and no spares avaliable, a lot of P32's have them and many broke and unhappy owners.

Hi Firsly you need to make your mind up, do you wat to go fast or slow as the £££££ will depend on what speed you want to go.

Now I will tell you first hand som years back a friend had a p32 with tmd40 140 hp volvos n on 280 drives, the boat would do 26knots flat out but I can tell you now it was no sea boat, it slammed like you would not believe id say first hand the hull layup weights would not cope with this for long, stood inside you could see the floor move when it hit a wave, the p32 and y hull 33 were not built for speed, the later planing 33 was one of bennets first planing hulls by princess.

Id really consider mating any volvo up to you already 280 drives as thats what should be on the back of the nissans, at a push and similar weights a 6 cylinder 41 or even better a pair of kad 32s, if you just want to go slow then buy a pair of transit engines and marinise from parts at Lancing marine.

You would not even begin to realise the cost of re engining a boat even with decent secondhand motors, which are proving hard to find in this climate as no one is spending on new repower projects.

Some update.

I sent an e-mail to lancing maarine and Mike answered this

Code:
If you are on sterndrives, you MUST use two, or you will not be able
to get the required amount of power down into the water, so two
engines around 130HP/3800RPM would need to be added to your existing
sterndrives.

If you are shaft drive, I would have thought it would be a lot of
hassle for no good reason to convert to single shaft.

I have found this page too

I think this is very good advice, ignore it at your cost.

Hello.

As I have already written, my brother wants 20-26 knots speed. It's his decision.

Thank you for your advice. I will tell him these engines, and try once again to convince him to put 2 instead of 1 engine.

Hi there,
I have a project 31 which was re-engined in 2007 with the Volvo 3.0 glp-d petrol engines and sx drives.
All I can say is this set seems to suit the boat very well regardless of cruising or "gunning" it.
The fuel consumption is not too bad, especially if just cruising, and its nice to be able to hold a conversation in the wheel house whilst underway!
The engines are simple as is the drive (all my own servicing), and if things do go wrong there are plenty of genuine/ aftermarket specialists, and they take up little room in the engine compartment.
I cannot say what she does flat out, the engines are rated a 135hp each, but she doesnt hang about!
I know the arguments for and against petrol engines, but me personally they suit my needs and im hardly likely to be planning a trip to the south of France in it! (id take the Ferry)!

Thank you.

I'll let him know, although I think he wants diesel engine only.

Were the Nissan units not pre the Ad40 era and coupled with rebadged 250 or 270 drives I don't ever remember actually seeing any and I have seen most of the Volvo range
I seem to recollect mention of them in the Volvo book so that would place them pre ad40.

Ι would like to thank everyone for the proposals. I managed to convince my brother to install 2 instead of 1 diesel engines.

He will probably buy the volvos. I will inform you.

Thank you again.
