Price Advice, Westerly Konsort

Personally, I would be very strongly put off by an ad which refereed to a new engine ready to fit. It conjures-up an image of an incomplete refit by someone who did not understand what they were doing. I would worry what other half complete bodges were hidden on the boat. I know that is not the case here, but that is how it would come across to me, and I would run away.

I don't understand ..... A caring long term owner makes a rational decision to invest in a brand new engine as an alternative to patching up an old engine. Due to reasons beyond his control he is unable to complete the refit. ..... Do explain how you conclude this is an owner that "did not understand what they were doing. I would worry what other half complete bodges were hidden on the boat" .... Do explain, I am all ears :-)

My mate has a terminal illness with three months to live and is house-bound. He was diagnosed just after he bought the engine. He wants to leave the boat proceeds to the RNLI and we are trying to maximise the value.

If you want to maximise the value, then get a broker involved and get the boat on the market - quickly. The longer it sits around the more it will deteriorate and the value will plummet. It seems that this is already happening - your comments about the headlining and cockpit gelcoat.

There is a huge problem building with older boats now in that many of them are reaching the stage that unless they have been regularly maintained and updated they are about to become worthless.

Stronger brands such as Westerly, Moody, British Hunter, Sadler etc will hold their value, but only if they are clean, tidy and up to date.

In reply to some of the other suggestions; having a new engine to fit probably won't put off someone looking at this type of boat, as long as it is the right price. Fitting the engine won't add £5K to the price, it is just easier to sell.

Ironically the fin keel Konsort isn't as popular as the bilge keel, even though it sails better - horses for courses.

So my advice - don't fit the new engine, spend time (rather than money) making the boat clean and tidy - get the hull (and cockpit) polished if necessary - and price it realistically. BUT GET IT LISTED NOW!! :)

Before anyone asks, yes I am a Broker

Please feel free to PM me if you would like any further advice or help. If the proceeds are going to the RNLI I would be happy to assist

WAIT! Please read what I said!

I DID NOT say that I thought this owner did not understand what they were doing. I explicitly said i knew that WAS NOT the case.

I was trying to be helpful and explain how I would view such a description if I was skimming a bunch of ads and did not know the background to this boat. I hope the OP did not misunderstand as you have.

Yes there is!

My mate has a terminal illness with three months to live and is house-bound. He was diagnosed just after he bought the engine. He wants to leave the boat proceeds to the RNLI and we are trying to maximise the value.

1st. I do hope you have not misunderstood the honest attempts from me and others to explain how they would view a boat like this if I knew nothing of the background. It sounds like a very sad situation and I did not dream of criticizing you or the owner.

2nd. Perhaps the solution is to tidy-up as best you can, advertise as is with no mention of a 'spare engine'. Then you can explain the situation to serious enquirers.

3rd. To be completely honest with you, and if I may venture a highly personal thought, I would not kill myself to earn a few more quid for an extremely wealthy organisation like the RNLI!

I did not spell out the situation fully in my initial post. I have no issue with any of these views, at all. Thanks to all for taking the time to give me the benefit of your opinion.
