I'm planning a trip to check out my new boat in mid February. Boat is on the hard in Ionion Marine in Preveza but I don't plan to stay on the boat. At the moment it looks like I'll be traveling alone and I'm planning to stay there for around 5 nights. I'm hiring a car in Athens. Days will be spent checking out the boat and making some preparations for a trip back to Turkey early April. At night I want to be able to walk out for dinner and a couple of glasses of wine hopefully followed by a couple of beers somewhere convivial. It would be a bonus to meet a few English speaking boaters. Where am I most likely to get my wishes in February? Any recommendations regarding hotels or places to stay with a decent breakfast and reasonably priced? Ianos Hotel in Lefkas Marina are asking for €45 per night single B&B which seems pricey at this time of year. Any and all advice appreciated.

We stayed at Ianos Hotel in December a couple of years ago when we were sorting out our new to us boat. Nice enough hotel with plenty for breakfast, enough restaurants and bars still open in Lefkas, we had a nice stay. Do not know what Preveza is like at that time.

Ianos is OK but always a bit expensive for what you get. Several other hotels open in Lefkas town but look on a booking sight like agoda or expedia to find the best deal. Loads of restaurants and bars are open through the winter and the best place to meet UK liveaboards is Porto in Lefkas Marina. Usually some people there at any time of day although sometimes during the day it is the ladies knitting group or suchlike. Preveza has plenty of restaurants and bars open but hardly any yachties around

Looks like Lefkas it is then. Pirofani doesn't have parking so I guess it will be Ianos Hotel or Hotel Levkas and a stroll to Porto Bar at night. Thanks for the input everybody.

If you post up on the 'friends of lefkas marina' Facebook group you'll find people renting out apartments, and the like.

Bear in mind that if you have to do any work on the exterior of the boat, it is quite possible to have a solid week of bad weather (up to 50knt winds predicted tomorrow).

Porto bar (allows smoking inside :( )can sometimes be lively and other times completely dead, so you'll need to pick your night but is probably a good place to meet like-minded folk.

Thanks Mike. I'm on my own so not really worth looking for an apartment and it's very convenient to be able to come downstairs to breakfast and coffee in the morning. I'm aware of the weather risk but a lot of what I need to do is not weather dependent. I may have to rethink Porto. As an ex smoker I can not abide smokey bars - there's none so pure as the reformed wh--e.

Not sure how Porto got away with it for so long , I remember the winter we spend the winter in Lefkas, the police turn up,ne night and there was a rush for the door and it's not just Porto many places in Greece turn a blind eye to smoking inside , although they seem to turn a blind eye to lots of things on Grece .
Just a thought you could try FB for someone who may have a berth for a small fee , or get in touch in Vicky at the yacht club who may be able to help you .
Did you manage to get in touch with Ionian yard in the end ?

Thanks Vic. It’s the same here in Turkey in wintertime. A lot of the bars allow smoking and the police turn a blind eye unless they get a complaint. Even then the police usually call the bar owner to warn him before they arrive. It’s changing though and some of the places which enforce the rules are doing better than the ones who don’t so the penny is beginning to drop. I’m surprised at the change in attitude towards smoking in a short few years.
I got the information I needed from the ex owner of my boat over the weekend so I didn’t need to contact them in the end.

Thanks I'll check it out when I'm there. I know I walked down that way when I was there in early October to buy the boat but I didn't notice it. Now that I know what I'm looking for I guess I'll find it easy enough.

I think the Irish bar is closed until early March. They certainly went away for a while before Christmas. Shame as it's a nice place, owned by Paula and David from Network Brokers. Depending who you bought your boat through you may get a cheap evening! Porto is generally not that smokey and if it does get bad a polite request is usually favourably received.
What happened with the wind this morning Carl? Been watching the forecasts and hoping my new mooring lines are OK. Sitting in Schiphol airport as I write this and never seen so many cancellations before. Driving here earlier was pretty exciting and all train services are cancelled due to high wind which is a new one to me.

Irish bar is open as of 15th Jan. Wind was bad 50knts though it was always on the forecast.

To be fair, I cannot stand smoke and so I hate Porto for it, but I did spend from 5pm until 3am in there this evening. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, you just have to let stuff slide.

Happy to check on your boat Pasarell if you tell me where it is. It's probably fine though as most of the worst winds were in the night and other than a slightly unfurled mainsail, I didn't have to rescue or fix anything around my dock.

If I'd just spent 10 hours straight in the pub I wouldn't be able to find the loo never mind sit down to post on a forum. Fair play to you. My flight gets into Athens after 18.00 and by the time I collect a bag and pick up a car I'm going to be late leaving and I definitely think I'll need a pint by the time I get to Lefkas. It's good to know the place will still be open - smoke or no smoke.

Levkas. if you are in Preveza you will be on the wrong side of the water to the yard and have to pay the tunnel toll at least twice a day. The car will use less fuel travelling to and from Levkas and anyway preveza has very little activity in Feb.
