Has anyone any recent information regarding the pollution off NW Spain. I don't seem to be able to find any recent web sites describing the current situation.
but the Spanish Government are banning a great many older tankers from their EEZ and are heading towards a first class row with Norway over this. They are also suing the American Bureau of Shipping for US$ 700M in New York, and are planning to raise sections of the wreck for use as evidence.
I got a dollop on my foot at the Iles de Glénan a few weeks ago. It is now rounding the point of Brittany and, with the currents, the Channel Islands are considered to be at risk in a few weeks time (according to French experts on the TV).
Constant cleaning operations are underway in France and Spain so there is no widespread remaining pollution just isolated dollops.
Set off from La Rochelle April 4th and returned from Nazare on Saturday, so currently fairly up to date. A minimal amount of oil down in the bottom SE corner of Spain (Santander area) out at sea, but very thin and non viscous. Having sailed through some there was absolutely no staining or damage to the boat. There was also a small amout around Gijon, but the cleansing operation was in full flow there.
Galicia, where the Prestige sank, is completely clear. The rias and islands are beautiful once again with clear water, golden beaches and lots of dolphins. Portugal is completely clear too.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. If you need any info. I'll be glad to help if I can.
Many thanks all for the information - looks like we're all clear to leave Ireland on the 22nd for Faro without too much fear of oil - I'll keep you posted
