Or clean the internal rim which often has gunge in it, preventing the clip from closing properly.

Also, if the screws holding them down are domed the female part cannot sit down fully. Make sure they have flat tops.

I have just put a smear of Vaseline on the female poppers-the ones on the canvas window covers-after a winter on the boat. All work much easier now, the springs clipping in with a satisfying 'click'.
