Just to complicate the thread event further. My Dell Latitude senses which mains adapter it is connected to and moderates its current draw. In other words it charges the battery faster if connected to the Dell charger. There's some discussion on line about it moderating the cpu frequency control as well though I'm not convinced. This may account for different power consumption people have noticed when supplied by a generic DC-DC converter compared to the standard adapter and an inverter.
Having discovered the above I assumed I could buy a Dell 12 volt unit that would talk to the laptop. However they don't seem to make them! Or rather Dell themselves don't sell Dell branded units. So I'm back to using the cheapy inverter.
An as yet uninstalled 600W inverter for 24V.
Cabling for ssme to attach one end to a bttery bank and the other to the internal 240v mains.
The remaining bits of the puzzle are:
1. Actually hook it all up
2. Plug the netbook in only when the motors are running, use battery life when static
3. Dissuade the children from watching the tv, the intention being to get a usb tv connecton or replace the old tv with a small flatscreen.
4. Consider a third battery bank when the dissasion in #3 above fails (or for the Dr Who season)
