I was told by a dentist friend to always put a spot of milk into tea or coffee, she said drinking it black caused tooth staining. No idea if that's true since I always slosh loads of milk in.
Milk absorbs tannins in the tea, which is why most of us add it, since it softens the taste. I can imagine that the tannins are also related to staining but don't know the details. I have taken to drinking quality leaf teas, which seem to be less tannic that ordinary brands, but still add milk.
