For many years I have bought cheap Chinese made stuff from ebay and have observed it get better and better. I am also old enough to recall when Japanese goods and especially motor bikes were referred to by many as Jap Crap.

I recently therefore had a punt and bought a 4 hp 4 stroke outboard that is clearly built from a strimmer engine. It was delivered in about 4 days and cost me the grand total of £180 all in. I have been doing some testing and I have now got the hang of starting it and it runs and starts very well.

It is incredibly light, is air cooled and actually quite quiet. Below are some pics and video of it running.

You need to add engine oil and also gearbox oil. As you might expect the instructions are terrible

Here is another video of it running and then one of it in a tub. It actually pushes water well. As to whether it is 4 hp well who knows :)

The Prop/gear works on some sort of centrifugal clutch. So at tick over prop is stationary and as you throttle up the prop turns. as I said it seems to have good power.

One funny thing is the Chinese have marked the H and L on the throttle that I assume is High and Low the incorrect way round :).

I primarily bought this just to have a go and see if it was any good. It is so light I think I will use it as my motor on my little tender to get me the 250 or so yards to my swing mooring.

One thing that I am not sure about and would appreciate any comments on is what side to lay it on as that aint covered at all in the fun instructions

Thanks, interesting to see a review - have seen them many times on eBay. Let us know how good it is on the water!

#4 Apparently needs to be kept upright, not laid down.
Bit confused about comments re water cooling?

The comments about water cooling are indeed confusing. Hangkai also make several 2 stroke water cooled cheap outboards and I think the translation looses stuff and the instructions a a sort of mix of both. You very much need to use your own noddle a bit with all of this Chinese stuff.

The keeping it upright is an issue. I can easily do this at home but to transport it will have to be laid down..... Just got to decide on which side :)

What was very interesting was that the water in the test tank was very clean after the test unlike when I run one of my 2 strokes in the same tank :)

Oil in it as it is a 4 stroke. I think it can lay down but it is a matter of finding out what side to lay it on

Ah yes, sorry was looking on eBay and saw all the 2 strokers. That is what I would get for that very reason.

Although, as long as its upright for a few mins pre start and you check the oil I think it will be fine.

That is what I am hoping..... The issue with buying the 2 strokes that is technically illegal as my use would be for pleasure use not commercial..... I know ebay wont care about that though :)

Yes, although on their part, not yours.

The two stroker is less than 10kg. Even comes with a spare impeller!
