Post Brexit - T2L

That’s done! Now off to get my car IDP (International Driving Permit). I’ll be driving in France and Spain over the Brexit period so thought I’d better be covered. Interesting that I need separate ones for each country. Even before we joined the EU I could get an international driving licence covering dozens of countries through the RAC.

Bit of a correction
You don't need one for each country. its just that Spain and France are covered by different conventions (1949 and 1968) so need two IDP's. They look exactly the same as the ones supplied by the RAC years ago.

Why have you bothered Marc ?
Have you the PO paper trail showing Fr reg and vat paid etc ?

Similarly because my boat has been IT reg,ed by a private person I have a paper trail showing that and the vat paid implications.
In fact being a blue hull and having IT port authority skickers on for most of its life you can still see the shadows where they were .Dispite loads of 3M cutting compound etc etc .

It’s just it it’s been registered in a previous life on a fiscally VAT paid proof to get on , said register and never been out of local waters then is that not enough ?

The wider problem that’s infact not Brexit related is this transient rule .
If you are transient defined as not spending more than 3/12 then your flag or home country rules apply .
How ever technically If are not transient, like you and me who basically permanently base out boats in France they can arguably request you comply with ALL local regs / rules / bylaws or what ever .
You have to be a Fr citizen for there boat reg and the tax that comes with that , so flashing a Brit passport and not having a permanent home address in Fr gets you off thst hook .

Safety stuff is doable see there bloc coiture book.
But the grey one is qualifications , the RYA stuff is fine as a transient but will it stand scrutiny if the Fr or Sp attempt to apply there local qualifications post Brexit sans any EU agreements on reciprocal arrangements??

One would hope common sense re reciprocal agreements or leave “it as was “ would role over ?

Think international driving liecence and green card .I have those all ready here in CH as we traverse IT and Fr .

In 2005 when I got first mobo coming from years of rag n stick , the deal with the wife and then toddler kids was I got proper training on a mobo .
I deliberately sought out the French permit d mer .I was a RYA member with rag n stick quallys .

I can do up to 24 M legally in Fr .

Well, for the price of 2 1st class stamps and 10 mins of my time, it was a no-brainer. Of course, I do have every other bit of paper, but one more can't hurt

Resident in Guernsey, we are not part of the UK and not a member of the EU. I've asked the RYA if we need a T2L. Nothing heard yet....

The contact from the RYA has been superb with two long phone calls from legal over the last few days. They have confimed that a Guernsey resident with their Guernsey registerd boat has successfully had a T2L confirmed and issued by HMRC. Although not absolute, I'm advised that a T2L will help in case of query.

Now to complete my application.

AFAIK, the T2L certifies that the boat is a Union Good.

Is your boat VAT paid or has ever been imported into the UK as a private boat?
Being in the Channel Islands, it is likely that your boat is outside the EU and not an EU Good anyway.

As I say, I'm no expert but AFAIK, the T2L is part of the documentation that you get when you import a boat into the EU.
From what I've seen, the T2L is part of a much bigger document that provides evidence that the boat has been legally imported into the EU.

Hi Hurricane, Yes, Play d'eau is VAT paid. The RYA says that although the specifics have not yet been finalised, knowing now that a Guernsey resident with their Guernsey registered boat has obtained a T2L from HMRC, it can only help if there's a potential problem.

So, although it's not a guarantee, it's a potential help. hence, I'm doing it.
