Possible Storm Surge Tuesday

All is well at Southwold.
Just one boat, a lifting keel westerly jouster fell over a bit as the wooden props washed out.
No damage.

Water was in our boat sheds but it was only 3 or 4" deep.
The flood last christmas was 2'6" in the shed by comparison.
Plenty of warning so all our kit was lifted and after a quick wash out we we probably only lost a couple of hours work.

Looks like it should just avoid going over the top of the lock walls at Shotley, but a bit hard to tell for sure from the webcam...

Still pretty high first thing this morning when LT was around half five at Ipswich.

I called into the New Cut at Ipswich about midnight last night. The water was absolutely rushing out of the Cut and yet the water level in the Cut was rising until 1am????

Yes I read that post and of course I experienced the event last year but what surprised me was the speed the New Cut was emptying and yet the level was rising and this time we never had any great rainfall draining into the Cut. The water was flowing so fast I would not have attempted to motor against the flow but the boat does only have a 5hp engine. The flow was something dangerous enough to stop any nonsense about narrowing the New Cut. The water in the Cut couldn't escape quick enough.

No the gate was not closed. It would have been a disaster if it had been! The choke point where the gate is was enough to stop the river emptying efficiently. The river used to be massive before the West Bank and Fox's was built out into the river and that was after the 1953 floods. Anything on the 1953 scale would flood Ipswich town centre now.

The first time I saw it in use was about 3 years ago. It was opened 3-4 times that year and Orwell Navigation knew nothing about it. I asked the chap operating it and he said it was to prevent scour but then he shut up and wouldn't tell me more???? Now they want to build another one and narrow the New Cut by half again. It seems to me they want to close it altogether and divert it through the dock so they have more space to develop:-(
