Possible Storm Surge Friday?

Low pressure and high winds may, and I say may, conspire to produce a storm surge Friday on the East Coast.
Keep an eye on the Scandinavian low and wind direction.

NTSLF is predicting no more than about 0.6m at Felixstowe Friday morning. As it's only just off neaps, (HW Felixstowe is 3.5m at 1038) shouldn't be a big issue....

Wind direction may keep this down though.

This mornings HW at Harwich appears to have topped out at 4.8m with a surge of just over 1.1m, tonight's tide is marginally higher!

It is interesting to look at the tide curve on the HHA website. Although the tide is now falling the surge is increasing, now 1.36m, it is a good job the peak of the surge did not co-incide with HW here.

I don't understand the timing of surges relative to the progression of HW , but might the peak surge and HW co-incide further South?

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for The Suffolk Coast at Southwold.
Flooding is possible.
The forecast high water is due at 8:30 pm on 9 Dec 2011.
Reference Port: Lowestoft
The predicted astronomical tide level is 00.94 m AODN.
The forecast surge height is 00.76 m.
The forecast tide level is 1.70 m AODN.
The forecast wind direction is West North West.
The forecast wind strength is force 6.
Low lying land and roads will be affected first.
This warning is in force until 10:30 pm.

Here are some pix taken around midday which was around HW at Orford Quay, with harbourmaster Philip leaving his office by dinghy. The other two pix were taken just after HW at Snape Bridge shortly before 2pm this afternoon.
The highest prediction for this week's springs is not in fact until Tuesday and that is not as high as last month's.

Went home again. Not sure anyone got caught on the Strood today despite rumours to the contrary. They were cleared away pretty quick if they were. Local paper covered the 'guy on the roof' on the last set of tides and by most accounts it seems he got what he deserved! Ironic that when it's that high, the Lifeboatmen are also cut off from their wellies in the Lifeboatshed.

Estimate is that it was a metre and a half over prediction here. Supposed to be 4.53m and looked more like 6m!

By the way, there is a sunken ex-naval pinnance by the Nass Beacon in the middle of the channel! Lot of head scratching going on about its removal. Apparantly had an eventful journey down from Heybridge Basin - hit Osea Road, engine failed, sunk. Was going to be someones houseboat!

When I eventually crossed the Strood at 1240 (HW 1109), there were two white vans, and Stroodcam had another one right in the middle from about 1000 ish....
