Hey Everyone!!

I pray that this topic hasn't been covered hundreds of times before, so apologies if so.

I'm hoping I could get some information & advice from you kind people about a possible career in Yachting. I've just wasted 3 years at uni and only just realised how I love being on boats, being by the water and travelling.

I'm particularly interested in getting info about becoming a deckhand on Motor / Superyachts rather than Sails. I keep hearing that it's competetive for finding work, so was looking for suitable course that could help me get a foot in the door.

I have been offered a course with a company in Southampton which includes, STCW-95, Powerboat Level 2, Competent Crew or Day Skipper Practical, Day Skipper theory, PWC Proficiency and Short range
certificate
..... Would that be an ideal way to start?

I'd appreciate any advice or information

Hey Aimy,

Your course does sound like a good place to start. You'll definitely need STCW95 training and the others are all useful too.

Have a look at some of the websites of the yacht crew agencies in Antibes/Palma (just do some googling) and to get an idea of what they're looking for in deckhands. And check out some job vacancies on www.superyachtjobs.com to see what they're looking for.

Also have a look at the Uksa website (www.uksa.org) for loads of useful info on careers.

And enjoy!
