Hi Angus,
You should be still within the trades zone at that time of year. However, do bear in mind that active depressions can be coming across the Atlantic, and these may be a fair way south, bringing the winds to the SW.

Yes, bad weather off the Atlantic can last for more than 3 days, but is totally dependent on the weather situation at the time.
Monitor the actual reports at http://www.atlanticweather.co.uk and this should give you a feel for how long such weather lasts.
