Travelers on the Lagos - Faro - Vila Real flyer will be well aware it is acceptable to board the train without a ticket and then pay the conductor, on demand.

Well apparently there is a change in policy. If there is a ticket office at your departure station (and it is open), you are supposed to buy your ticket before boarding the train. Failure to do so may involve a €100 surcharge.

Yet to hear of anybody actually being charged so is this just BS from an idle conductor?

Probably not a change but as you say an idle or officious little man.

They do this in Switzerland too. Very expensive to not have a ticket now. I got let off just after they changed the rules. I don’t expect that will happen now.
