Just sitting at work and had a thought to sail to Caen!! Don't ask me why just popped into my head - probably down to the fact I've had my leave cancelled again!!!

I sail a Sigma33 and was wondering if anyone has the rough figures to hand for distance etc!

Thanks in advance

I make it about 100nm from Portsmouth entrance to Ouistreham. You then have to lock in to the canal and wait for the daily convoy for the 8 miles up to Caen. Last year they were only publishing the lock opening times 1 or 2 weeks in advance as they depend on river flow, etc. In theory it is about 3 hours etiher side of high water; but the first time we went there the first ingoing lock was 1 hour before high water. Not a nice place to wait for the lock if the wind is in the North, otherwise OK. But the waiting pontoon becomes a bit of a scrum. Beautiful marina (above lock) and excellent fish market at Oistreham. Berths in the heart of the city at Caen.

I agee with comments above, that it can be quite unpleasant on the waiting pontoon and the lock does not seem to follow the opening pattern stated in the almanac. This site gives the actual opening times

Once inside, the marina is fine and there are a couple of chandleries handy. You can get up as far as the Pegasus Bridge and the new museum without worrying about bridge openings.
