PORTLAND COASTGUARD, PORTLAND CO...who do I call now?

We spoke to an NCW Solent member at SIBS on Saturday, Darryl Sinclair yclept, an Orcadian who went to sea as a MN boy Cadet (remember when we had them and an MN?)
Now I wouldn't object to him watching my back via Ch65, rather than the Fareham Watch on Sunday, who were taking absolute ages to respond laboriously to the various Solent IRBs and LB's calling in, unlike the swift, professional responses prior to the move to Fareham.

Another triumph for 'operational' (Really speedy, cost cutting driven) changes led by parachuted in, "Transferrable Competantcies" equipped Senior Civil Service dynamic thrusters, who will be long gone to their next CV enhancing c@@kup by the time the inevitable fatal error chain leads the PAC to go looking for blood, let alone the relatives and "meja".

Having lived through one or two, you could see the signs for the HMCG re-org from the start. Don't get me wrong, I lived with constant change in my working environment for 36.5 years, it's how you manage those changes that counts-just holding a meeting and saying " It is done, oh King" doesn't cut the mustard-

you have to know what you're doing, and take the workforce with you-from a red biro & a black biro once a year, right through green computer screens( remember them??) to today's all singing, all dancing 'layabouts charter' laptops, with internet access for all.:(

(and don't even get me on the absolute folly of leaving the card games etc on consoles which staff are supposed to be doing work on- a Managers nightmare:disgust:, particularly with the calibre available under 40 y.o. inside the M25 recruited via a HR dept who don't have to lead/work with them every day:(

End of Rant:rolleyes:

Now, what was the question?

Life, T'Universe, and Everything, C'mon, wake up at the back!
It'll be "HMCG Call Centre", and if you're not effectively put on hold as the RNLI and other resources were last Sunday in the Solent, then it'll be....

"CG Call Centre, sorry to bother you during a meeting, but i've rammed a tanker and a sea of flames is sweeping down tide towards Fawley, and there are four discharging LPG tankers in it's path.."

"I'll redirect you, Sir, to ABP HO, we are all in a CV compression and restatement seminar at the moment..."

The reorganisation asked for huge input from those of us doing the job, and many officers wrote a lot of plans and ideas for the future.

Sadly, not a single one was taken any notice of, given that the Head of Maritime Ops (yes, really is called HoMO) is an ex Shetland watch manager who has never handled multiple incididents in his life, and, in his own words, "doesn't do consultation".

I'd steer clear of the Solent area for a bit, there's a nav warning out for flocks of low flying chickens coming home to roost.

Has the MCA put any effort into a public information campaign prior to this significant change?

Where is the advert in Yachting Monthly describing permissible and preferable Coastguard call signs following this change. I have not seen any related notices to mariners on Harbour Master notice boards around the Solent.

One benefit of "business as usual" is that the merged pool of Fareham CG operatives can respond to a call based on the requested call sign or does the equipment at Fareham HQ route audio from a coastal mast to the appropriate pool of staff specializing in the original Solent or Portland areas?

It would go to whichever desk is handling that aerial that day. Which could be Fareham. Or Shetland.

Geographical knowledge is irrelevant don't you know...

On the reasonable? assumption that all calls from any CG mast between Weymouth and Selsey end up at Fareham, what internal routing takes place?

I'm not sure if the plan is still to move to a generic (and awful) "UK Coastguard".

That might have to be rethought on Friday morning, with a bit of luck.

That said, a single callsign seems a very sensible idea. I have no idea where the radio boundaries are between Teuchter, NOOOO and Scouse Coastguards, and it seems easier to let the aerial with the best signal dictate who deals with me.

Did many serious incident occur as a direct result of missing local knowledge from the closure of Oban CG - which covered about twenty times as much coastline as Solent, Portland and Brixham put together?

Different user profiles - the south is deluged with people who have no idea where they are - one 999 call I took was from someone on a beach "at the end of the M5". By and large, northern waters users are far more familiar with both the sea, and where they are.

But there has been at least one pretty damning MAIB report following issues after Clyde's closure.

Clyde didn't exactly shine in the Aquilla episode.

If I happened to be sailing by and the desire to call the coast guard suddenly came up.

I would call using the familiar name. Portland, Solent or other. I would expect during the transition there would be a polite response using the new official title.

If my reason for calling was more urgent. I would use the traditional call. May Day.

In reality there should be a NTM detailing the change.

My local CG stations are going through a consolidation process as well. The VTS changed quite a few years back from vancouver to Victoria.
Saying the old title for a while was not a big deal.
I believe comox and tofino are closing and there areas will be covered by prince Rupert and Victoria

Re Channel 65 for NCI use. Only Watchkeepers who hold a VHF Short Range certificate will be allowed to transmit on 65, therefore they will be as qualified on the equipment and procedures as most amateur mariners. Lets be fair, who amongst us is a regular user of the equipment, apart from calling up for a marina berth! Or a generally unnecessary radio check.

How about calling 'CROSSMA JOBOURG , CROSSMA JOBOURG', ICI Le bateau Anglais Lady in Red'.......:D

That would have worked very well on Tuesday evening when the Jobourg signal was drowning out Solent on Ch16 as we were sailing past Ventnor (where, I think, there is a gert big aerial if the Maritime & Safety Information announcements are to be believed!)
