If you missed it. BBC 2 programme "Coast" had a piece on the tidal race at Portland Bill.
With the "pressure" of the tides any short cut would be mainly unusable except at slack water
There was once a plan for a canal from Penzance to Hayle. The demise of sailing coasters put the kibosh on it.It just needs a lock and some shelter to the west. The lock fees would pay for it in no time. (Only dreaming).
Joking aside, there is a genuine proposal for something similar in Germany, where the headland of Dasser Ort can present something of a barrier to westbound craft for much of the year. It would be fairly simple to cut a short passage from the inland bodden to make this region passable even in bad weather.
Thanks for the clip; I remember seeing it first time round.
What we need is a short cut through Chesil Beach. It wouldn't cost much and would save us sailors a lot of bother.
