Portland Bill Race

Thanks for the clip; I remember seeing it first time round.

What we need is a short cut through Chesil Beach. It wouldn't cost much and would save us sailors a lot of bother.

I'm glad they mentioned The Race and said what they did, it may deter some TV watching would-be lilo adventurer from setting off; but they could have explained that was on a good day !

With the "pressure" of the tides any short cut would be mainly unusable except at slack water

It just needs a lock and some shelter to the west. The lock fees would pay for it in no time. (Only dreaming).

Joking aside, there is a genuine proposal for something similar in Germany, where the headland of Dasser Ort can present something of a barrier to westbound craft for much of the year. It would be fairly simple to cut a short passage from the inland bodden to make this region passable even in bad weather.

There was once a plan for a canal from Penzance to Hayle. The demise of sailing coasters put the kibosh on it.

I think I'm right in saying the idea of a canal through Chesil Beach has been mooted for well over a century, not least by the navy seeking a quick way in & out; as far as I remember the tidal differences and exposure to the west make it impractical.

I wouldn't mind a £ for every sailor who'd have given their left wotsit for such an easier route at times though !
