Portimao

Was there. Planned to stay there for two weeks and left four months later. In early 2004, there was a huge contingent of cruisers wintering there. Great crowd, great marina, easy access to shops & bars and it was about 1/4 the price of Lagos marina.

Re: Portimao re: IzzyC

Hi IzzyC, I'm trying to contact a mate. He's on a 42ft white wooden ketch name unknown but believe its a Holman. Mate's name is Gianni known as Johnny about 30-40ish should you come across him could you ask him to email Steve on oakum@hotmail.co.uk - thanks, enjoy your stay.

Re: Portimao re: IzzyC

email the Marina and ask them to forward your message. There's a link to their website on an earlier post of mine.

Have been there since the end of September '05. Temporarily back in UK to sort some things out then hope to return end April/early May.

For winter 6 mth contract for a 47 ft boat Portimao is £800 less than Lagos. Lagos has convenient supermarket and attractive old town but we felt a little like we were in a goldfish in a bowl there.

Good social life at both marinas. Very well organised at Lagos with a risk of feeling a little 'Hi Di Hi' if not careful. We only stayed for two nights (Eu 56/night in Sept mid season was not for us). Those there seem to swear by it though so it must be very good.

We found the social life also good in Portimao marina but it is a working town - not to everybody's taste but we enjoy it. Downside is the adjacent Praia de Rocha. OK in low season but definitely very ' all day English Breakfast' in season so we don't go there much.

Marina staff very friendly at Portimao. Lagos we found polite but of the 'we will let you know if we can fit you in' variety after long intakes of breath. We were not able to secure a winter berth after after chasing for a few days although we did get a call about a month later saying they could now accomodate us. We had found Portimao and liked it so had signed up there by then.

Don't think you can really go wrong at either place though.

Hope this helps and is not too late!
