I was wondering if the authorities would just let me anchor in Portchester Lake, without paying, for a couple of weeks? Or even months! Probly some harbour dues if course. I believe it is mainly mud and I have a flat bottom anyway. Thanks for local knowledge.

What do you mean "just anchor" ? Will you be on the boat or just looking for somewhere cheap for a while to Moor the boat ?

Your main concern in the winter months might be ending up on the foreshore rather than any harbour dues. I am not a Portchester local but pretty certain mooring blocks have ended up drifting ashore in any blow.

I'm a member at Porchester Sailing Club and a couple of boats have finished up on the shore by the A27 in previous winters. The wind can gallop across the harbour and I would not leave my boat at anchor overnight unattended in the harbour in winter.

Do you know if that boat still on the 'hard' by turn off to Port Solent from the A27?

I reckon you'd do better looking for a spot on the west side, somewhere in the Quay Lane area. More shelter, and less fetch for most of the strong winds but, in a blow, I'd still want a robust dinghy to get there from the Hardway public pontoon which is the only public launching spot around there
