In the water .... most of the year!!

Many here will know that I'm a bit of a Sea Gypsey this year and travelling around Scotland.

On my way North I called into Portavidie Marina for showers ect. when I asked to pay I was told that short term berthing (few hours) was free and the use of the showers ect was complimentary.

We then decided that we would have breakfast in the restaurant...... excellent and far above what I/we expected.

I'm now returning South after my trip through the Caledonian and Crinan and needed to put Little Ship somewhere safe for a couple of weeks so I decided to use Portavidie, the staff were more than accomodating and welcoming and LS is now tucked up there for a while. I have decided that as I havent been in the Clyde for some years I would take this opportunity to stay a while, probably a month... maybe longer.

All I can say is that Portavidie has by far the best facilities of any marina I have ever visited and I would recommend it to anybody in the area for at least a night over and a meal in the restaurant.

I know if it was'nt so far away for me Little Ship would be berthed there each summer. It is about 6 hrs from my home and that is the only fault I can find with it.

If your in the area give it a try, I dont think you will be disappointed.

Looks nice, sounds Spanish!
OK
Looks like it's a Language night tonight
'Portavidie' is from the Gaelic
'Port A Mhadaidh'
'The Harbour of the Wolf' !
Kinda literally translated
Wolf in Welsh
'Blaidd' well one of the versions
The pronounciation of 'Mhadaidh and 'Blaidd' is quite close
Specially with a bit of Scotch down yer gullet
Now a 'Gullet' is a kinda Turkish boat
So when the Turks invaded ---- ok, I won't go there fer now:D
Too much info fer you English types
And as for the 'Gwyddeliod' well --- they need 'Right' and 'Left printed on thier wellies:rolleyes:

Agree with you

Spent alot of time up there absolutely stunning scenary
Cruising through The Sound Of Sleat Malliag to Portree and out to the small Isles moored Loch Nevis
Something that no on should miss even if on a ferry!

Take great care around there, Tom.

We launched at Dumbarton, planning to spend a few weeks in the area, found a nice berth in Rothesay inner harbour & stayed 3 years - until we sold that boat. It sorta sucks you in, a superb cruising ground with loads of tiny harbours, sheltered water & fabulous scenery.

That might be so, still sounds Spanish though :p

It's Portavadie.
And the Clyde and the entire area is just rubbish. You should be warned and all stay away. I will make sure I continue my normal patrols every weekend and any time I can around Arran, up the Kyles and Loch Fyne just to check that it is all as rubbish as ever. Loch Striven? Pah! Loch Riddon? Full of water (until the last wee bit). Tabert? Dont make me laugh. I go up there all the time and just cant believe how awful they all are.
I have even booked a flat for a week in Portavadie Marina with the boat parked outside the window just to see how bad it can get.
Keep away.

I agree I was just trying to fool the boating community........ If your about and you see LS call in and we can discuss the awful area and what needs to be done to make it available to the majority :) :)

Nice to meet you

Hi Tom and Babs,
It was nice to meet you at Portavadie (our home marina). Where did you end up when we left the marina at the same time? We went South towards Arran, you appeared to be heading up Loch Fyne - we wondered if you were going to dine at the Oyster Catcher Hotel Otter Ferry.

Anyway, wishing you continued good journey.

Hi Clarke, we went to Otter ferry but decided that with the weather conditions about to change we would return to Portavadie rather than spend the night on the moorings rock and rolling all night. We went back in the car for the evening meal. It was spot on and we both enjoyed it :)

Sorry we didnt catch you again but we will be back there in a couple of weeks........ keep in touch.

Tom & Babs. :)

thanks for the tip,
we will consider this marina to stay the night before we go through the Crinan canal, or at least make a coffee stop there,
Its in september, unfortunotly Little ship will be gone by then as discussed before :)
