morning everyone,

I have a quick question for you, Do you think one of these

Arteck Car Jump Starter Up To 4.0L Auto Battery Charger and 12000mAh Portable External Battery Charger for Automotive with Clamp, Flashlight, 12V Output 400A Peak: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

Would be capable of jump starting a volvo D4 diesel?

Just asking as I'm wondering if itmight be worth having one on board as a backup in case I accidentally manage to flatten both my batteries while away for a couple of days without access to shore power. Its an unlikely scenario as I do have separate starting and house batteries but you never know.

Yeah I know I'm unlikely to use it, but it's pretty cheap, and doesn't take much space, plus another gadget is always good.

I've bought two similar items, one for the boat and one for the 'plice in Spine'.
So far not used either so can't comment. But the reviews were good - assuming they are genuine (???)

One thing that would worry me is having that amount of stored energy in a small unit which might be treated with less care and respect than a conventional battery.

Also note the marketing bullshit of 12000mAh. Sounds massive, doesn't it?

The D4 is an electronic engine, they are very sensitive to low voltage on a battery any way.

Both the HCU and ECU are very expensive, I am not sure how jump starting with 24 volt in the circuit would react or would it fry the HCU or ECU?

Also after starting engine and disconnecting the jump pack will you have enough in the flat battery to run the D4 which is sensitive to low voltage any way.

I would advise caution and checking it out with your main dealer first.

I'm sceptical but willing to be educated. In your tech manual the starting battery specs are 2x88Ah 800cca

Your advertised pack is 12Ah. It can deliver a peak short burst of 400 Amps.

You're going to try jumpstart with this?

good luck.

At best you may just pump enough recharge back into the duff battery for it to do it's job. But jumpstart is liable to set the whole shebang into a lovely fire as is Li-ons want went over stressed. Is that a knee jerk reaction from me? Well the manufacturer print carries a warning...... WARNING: If the engine does not start immediately on the first try, disconnect the jumper cables from the car battery and wait at least 10 seconds before reconnecting the jumper cables to the car battery. .... thats not for the health of your slave system btw

It comes out OK in this review Top 10 Jump Starters of 2020 - Best Reviews Guide

The max amps are a bit low for a dedicated starter battery but provided you keep it charged then it should work fine.
It is easy to get sucked into "what if" purchases and you probably won't ever use it except to charge your phone. That's good!
I have one that I keep on my boat, and you are right I’ve only used it to charge my phone. When I go on a long car journey I take it with me. I keep it in the wheel well, shouldn’t really because it’s also a window hammer and seatbelt slasher?

I can recommend the Durite jump packs, they are 12 and 24 volt and have started trucks and buses with them, amazing performance

Bruce, I couldn't find anything official that stated what the cca of a d4 should be, where did you read that it needs 800a? If that's correct then that pack I linked to clearly won't be able to supply enough juice, which was the reason I posted really.

The durite jump packs are a “smart” unit and automatically select voltage and can be used on 12 & 24 volt

Technical Data , Electrical

That is 300 amps free running, you need much more to get the starter turning and this would be around 850 amps for your engine minimum, once it has turned the engine over a few times it will drop its current draw to maybe 300 amos.
