Portable Generator advice wanted

I'm about to have my boat taken out at a marina where there's no power available on the hard. Amongst other things, I want to use a hot air gun, & these tend to be rated at 1.8-2.0 KW. In order to run these, should I be looking at a rating of a generator over say 2.5KW?
 
Yes you will need a rating over 2kw. Generators tend to come in different styles. The old style used an alternator run at 3000 RPM or 1500RPM all the time to produce 50 hertz AC. Later styles use an alternator generating AC at wild frequency which is rectified to DC (like a car alternator but higher voltage) This DC feeds an inverter to produce AC 50 hertz. The inverter can be modified sine wave or pure sine wave. The latter being better for AC synchronous motors (fridge etc) but former OK for electric tools and your heat gun. The advantage of the generator/inverter is that at low loads the engine can run slow at ow power but is cranked up in speed when electrically loaded. Much quieter on low loads.

I bought an absolutely brilliant 5kva Petrol Generator for only £99 (Brand New, delivered) off eBay. A site called Trushopping. OK it was perhaps a Honda copy. but did not say Honda. On their eBay site the fluctuate in price. I would definately buy another one from them.
 
Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to buy a Honda which would also be usable on boat to charge batteries etc, but can see their power output too low, and cheap generators available which will do the job (but would be too big/noisy for summer use whilst boating).

In fact, I've got a Black and Decker heat gun buried away in a locker deep under the bed. I must have used it at some time for something on the boat, so it ran via either the 2500w inverter, or Honda EU20i.

Older Black and Decker heat guns were only 1200w though.
 
You can get quite a lot of days alongside with shore power for £600.
There are lower power hot air guns available.
I have one which is happy with my 600W comedy chinese generator.
There are also catalytic gas ones.

I bought a Honda EU20I last year For occasional use whilst moored. It’s so quiet compared to some others. Anyway as I’m often at the boat, which is probably not too far from yours, let me know if you want to try it before you buy one.
