Looks like I could be heading into Port Solent Sunday afternoon. How long can I expect to queue to get through the lock?

That's one of those how long is a piece of string questions. Will it be sunny and calm, will lots of boats be out, what time are you arriving, will the lock be in free flow (haven't been bothered to check tides).. Never had to wait much more than half an hour, and often just gone straight in.

Also, when you say you are heading there, are you staying? Can stay on pontoon outside if visiting, so don't even need to go through lock

Portsmouth tides (BST) for this Sunday

02:15 1.6m
09:01 3.9m
14:35 1.5m
21:31 4.2m (freeflow at Port Solent lock 21:01 - 21:51)

If the weather turns out as expected could be a lot of boats coming in mid afternoon and around low water the lock cycles will be long so not the best scenario

As Brendan has suggested there is a waiting pontoon, you could plan to use the waiting pontoon until later in the evening when the traffic has died down and the tide is up

Re: oho! more gelcoat polishing

um it could be a fair while, cos the tide is low. A full cycle will take 40 minutes near low tide - later (5 onwards) the better as it gets nearer and nearer to high tide

Watch out for some nouveau rich B@astard in a big weird open powerboat who always seem to get pushed to the front of the queue somehow - cos if you touch his boat in the lock the crew are a right bunch of gits getting names and addresses and quotes for fixing it :)

You'll know if I've scratched it 'cos you'll have a 3ft long burgundy stripe down the side.
