Port Solent Marina

Um. Interesting. I happened to go there a few weeks ago to visit a (non marine) company I deal with who happen to have offices in the marina, and liked it, might be a better bet for us than Sovereign where we're currently planning to be although it's a bit more money. Access from the roads network was very good but that means the road noise is very present though - what do people make of that?

Have to go off site to buy provisions or even a national newspaper.

In a way I'm glad you said that - confirms I wasn't imagining it when I was unable to find anywhere to buy a sandwich or anything else to take with me for lunch when joining a boat there.

I've since taken to keeping a pack of army biscuits and a couple of peperamis in my work bag just in case :)

Yep, save the restaurants which are fine in their way, not much to buy to eat except from the shoe shop a la Charlie Chaplin.

Noise. We last visited a few weekends ago and were berthed further in than ever before, just by the restaurants and shoe shop. So close to the motorway link road. You could hear the traffic. You could just about pretend it was the sound of surf somewhere hot and sandy. But it was a cold night and we heard nothing to disturb us once we had the hatchboards in.

Possibly more noise from the restaurant clientèle in high summer?

Can't say I've ever noticed the noise. However, we are on B pontoon so almost the furthest point from the potential noise sources.

One bad point I didn't mentioned earlier is guano. Port Solent seems to suffer more than most marinas with a starling infestation from the end of August until nearly Christmas. Particularly in September and October they gorge all day on local elderberry and blackberry and then drop kilogrammes of indelible purple guano all over the deck during their pre-sunset 'social' in the rigging. I despair every time I visit the boat at that time of year - but it does, eventually, all wash off!

Although its off-site, the local Tesco is huge and is walking distance. We have only over wintered there (twice), and found it very convenient, with excellent facilities.

We have been there for a few years now and have no complaints. As others have already said the facilities are excellent and it's very easy to get to by road. I can't say that I have ever noticed any road noise. It's very secure and the lock means no swell. The one thing that I would add is that the staff are excellent, we have always found them helpful and more than willing to give that bit of extra service that makes the difference. There are security staff on watch day and night. We even get a text if the weather is really bad to say that they will be keeping an eye out.
