Port of Registry

Excuse the numpty questions....

If I bought a boat and registered on the SSR (no Part 1) do I need to put a port name on the stern at all?

If so, does it need to be a UK port or is it where the boat is kept (say SCM)?

Could I put whatever port I like?

And before anyone asks, there's NFW I'm putting 'Gloucester' on it (fellow Cheltonians will understand this)!

SSR is just name and SSR number
Also the name doesn't need to be unique so even if it's on the P1 register you can have it.

Port of registry is a hangover from the days when the registry did indeed have offices in different ports so the registration document showed that port. No such thing for SSR, nor requirement to have a port. However, many foreign states make a thing of it (for example in Portugal it is an offence not to have the name of the port on the boat so makes sense to make sure you have a port name on your boat if you go abroad. Use a well known place with a "nautical" ring to it.

I'm pretty sure that when we SSRed our first boat - perhaps ten years ago - we were invited to nominate a port of registry, but the concept certainly does not exist on the current SSR application.
