Hi, can anyone advise me if Port Ellen pontoons are currently in service? I had heard that a pier development is ongoing, stopping access to the pontoons?

Try calling them? There are contact numbers on their web page- Google it.
Even if the pontoons are not available there are- or were- a number of moorings in the ( rolly) bay
And if they don't float yer boat then there are dozens of good anchorages just north of there- or Lagavuillin's moorings...the possibilities are endless.

Friends were there with a 47ft charter boat two weeks ago and stayed 2 days so can confirm they are useable.

I was there end of April and they are fully serviceable, nothing has changed from last year other than a slight change to the buoyage. Also, the Indian restaurant is still as good as ever.

Great -thanks all. Leaving from Troon Friday morning, aim for the Mull and then to Gigha or Port Ellen depending on wind direction........

North-westerlies forecast, so perhaps Gigha is the better bet? What time are you leaving? I'm planning the same trip tomorrow, weather permitting.

Agreed! but keeping options open. Planning to leave Troon around 10 ish, want to get to the Mull/Sanda passage early , perhaps initially pushing the tide a little, but to get to the west side before it gets too strong as North going tide against north westerly wind will make the west side of the mull uncomfortable......!

Sounds like a good plan. I'll keep an eye out for you, though I may well go south of Sanda to avoid the worst of the overfalls. Last one to Ardminish is a sissy!

Both made it safely, great sailing. Snug in a very peaceful Ardminish Bay. Not sure about sissy's tho

Either of you in a Red hulled boat? I passed one just as I was leaving Sanda Sound on fri around 1 pm. I had a Fantastic sail all the way fom Ballycastle to Pladda then got the wind on the nose up to Brodick. I did think someone had got the tides a bit wrong arriving at Sanda that early going west.

I was the sissy, went South of Sanda, and caught a two knot adverse tide despite the almanac and plotter suggesting near slack water. Great sail thereafter. Not red hulled though.

Yup, that was us! Glad you old use it.
No, we were not the red hulled boat, we were a couple of miles ahead of them. Tides worked out very well......
BUT. Now stuck n Tobermory with failed water pump on the engine, and cannot sail south due to non existent winds.
